Thank you to Mikhail Gorbachev for helping fact check Tucker here. This whole interview was surprisingly insightful for revealing the central conflict in our world today. People like Tucker don’t hide it anymore. It’s between those who support a better rules-based world of nation states and those, like Tucker, who want to see the world dragged back to an age of empires - just as Hitler and Stalin tried together. Tucker is enthralled to Russia, repeatedly arguing that countries like Britain wouldn’t be threatened if they just let Russia take Ukraine and dominate its neighbours. Anyone with a basic understanding of history ain’t buying it. Jacob Rees-Mogg puts up a firmer defence of nation states than Tucker was expecting. He points out that signalling weakness to dictators and letting them consume ever more territory does not enhance anyone’s security. In reality, all nations are better off when sovereignty is respected within a rules-based system that allows smaller countries to exist too. It’s the most basic principle of the post-WW2 era, which helped create the most extraordinarily prosperous and peaceful period of world history. And that includes the sovereign right of every nation to decide its own security alliances hence why, as Gorbachev says, there was no agreement that countries like the Baltics can’t join NATO. Tucker refuses to answer whether it was a mistake for the US to guarantee Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, along with the UK and Russia, in exchange for Ukraine giving up nuclear weapons. He can’t answer because he clearly still wants nations like Ukraine to lower their defences in exchange for false guarantees. Remember that.
