Let winter arrive, Ethanol is going to create one of the biggest problems in high-altitude regions, and hardly anyone is talking about it. After 15 years in motorsport and travelling across the Himalayas, I can say this in written. Let winter arrive, and places like Leh, Spiti, and other parts of Himachal will face the real impact. At temperatures touching -30°C in Spiti, even normal petrol used to struggle. We often carried octane boosters to improve cold-weather performance. Petrol was still more reliable than diesel, which could gel in extreme conditions. Now imagine fuel that absorbs moisture. In freezing temperatures, that moisture can freeze, restrict fuel flow, block fuel lines, crack pipes, and prevent ignition altogether. A vehicle can become completely immobile when it’s needed the most. For nearly six months every year, people in these regions depend on petrol vehicles for medical emergencies, essential supplies, and daily life. Fuel isn’t a luxury there it’s a lifeline. This is a serious technical issue that nobody seems to be discussing today. Shell in the Spotlight Again as More Motorists Blame Contaminated Fuel Sold at Their Stations for Engine Damage Fuel service stations operated under the Shell brand, which is managed by Vivo Energy Kenya, are once again on the spot after another frustrated motorist blamed poor-quality fuel for allegedly damaging his car engine. The incident reportedly happened just moments after the driver refueled at Shell Links Road in Mombasa when the vehicle began losing power on the way to Voi. Despite pushing forward, the problem worsened, and the car eventually stalled a few kilometres before Kitui, forcing the motorist to seek emergency mechanical assistance. A mechanic from Kitui ran a diagnostic test and found severe engine damage, including a completely worn-out piston, citing contaminated fuel as the likely cause of the problem. With no alternative, the motorist had the vehicle towed back to Mombasa and reported the matter to Vivo Energy Kenya. A representative from the company requested a fuel sample for testing at their laboratory. On Tuesday, they informed her that the sample had passed all tests. The motorist, dissatisfied with Vivo Energy’s response, instructed his mechanic to conduct a more thorough inspection of the engine to determine the extent of the damage. Upon dismantling the engine, the mechanic once again confirmed that one piston was completely worn out, an issue he attributed to contaminated fuel. According to the mechanic, the level of damage was consistent with prolonged exposure to poor-quality fuel, suggesting that the problem began soon after refueling. The motorist, convinced that bad fuel was responsible, claims to have gathered video evidence showing the fuel sample in a mixed and compromised state. She insists that the sample, which was taken directly from her vehicle, appeared discoloured and inconsistent with what is expected of high-grade V-Power petrol. Despite presenting this evidence, Vivo Energy reportedly maintained that their tests found no issues with the fuel. The motorist is now escalating the matter, determined to hold Vivo Energy accountable for the damage. She has shared video evidence, showing the contaminated fuel and is calling for independent testing to verify its quality. Frustrated by what she sees as the company’s unwillingness to take responsibility, she is considering legal action and has reached out to consumer rights groups for support. This case adds to growing complaints from Kenyan motorists about fuel quality, with recent independent tests exposing major discrepancies in octane levels at several stations. An automotive content creator Kim JH of Tanuki Garage recently went around Nairobi, purchasing fuel samples from different stations and conducting on-the-spot octane tests. The findings revealed that some premium fuels, including Shell V-Power, underperformed compared to standard fuels. For instance, Total Limuru Road recorded the highest performance with a PON of 92, while Shell V-Power scored lower, challenging the common perception of premium fuel superiority. His findings, shared widely on social media, sparked outrage, with motorists demanding accountability from fuel retailers. Following the viral exposé, oil marketers, including Vivo Energy rushed to dismiss the findings, arguing that independent tests lacked credibility and did not follow industry-approved procedures. Shell Kenya, through Vivo Energy, insisted that its fuel met regulatory standards, pointing to tests conducted by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA). However, the issue has refused to die down as more motorists continue to report unusual engine problems after refueling from previously reputable stations. Meanwhile, consumer advocacy groups have joined the debate, urging EPRA to conduct random and independent fuel quality tests at petrol stations across the country. They argue that the current reliance on oil marketers’ internal tests is inadequate and fails to protect motorists from potentially damaging fuel. The controversy has also drawn the attention of lawmakers, with some calling for stricter oversight and stiffer penalties for companies found selling substandard fuel. RYANAIR BOEING 737 COCKPIT SUN VISOR SHUTS DOWN ENGINE MID-CLIMB On December 8, Ryanair Boeing 737 flight FR3505 departed Kraków (KRK) for Milan when an unusual cockpit incident occurred shortly after takeoff. While climbing through approximately 8,000 feet, a cockpit sun visor detached and struck the fuel cut-off switch, shutting down one engine. The crew stopped the climb at 10,000 feet, declared a PAN-PAN, held altitude, and successfully restarted the engine. The aircraft continued safely to Milan and landed without further issues. I am compelled to share a deeply concerning experience that occurred to me on Monday, 12/04/2026 at around 12:03 which poses a serious risk not only to motorists but to public safety at large. After filling up my vehicle with a full tank of fuel at Oasis Filling Station along Kamloops Road in Kalingalinga, Lusaka, my vehicle stalled barely 1.9 km from the station while driving on the highway (Nangwenya Road). The engine completely shut down and could not restart. Initially, I suspected a battery issue and spent nearly two hours attempting multiple jump-starts, all to no avail. I then contacted my mechanic, who advised that the vehicle be towed back home for proper inspection. Upon draining the fuel system, we discovered a shocking issue: the fuel contained a significant amount of watery liquid (see pictures attached to this post) Visually and physically, it resembled water contamination. This immediately raised serious concerns about the quality and safety of fuel being dispensed at the station. I returned to the filling station and reported the issue to the manager on duty. Unfortunately, she appeared to have limited authority and could not provide immediate assistance or resolution without consulting her superiors. Regrettably, this engagement yielded no meaningful response. Even more concerning, Oasis Filling Station management has proven to be difficult, and non-compliant in resolving the issue affecting my vehicle, despite clear evidence and multiple affected customers on site. worse off, five other motorists were present at the station reporting similar incidents—vehicles breaking down shortly after refueling from the same location. As it stands, my vehicle is currently immobilized, and I am likely facing costly repairs due to what appears to be contaminated fuel. Sadly, This situation is not just an inconvenience—it is a serious safety hazard. Like in my case, a vehicle stalling unexpectedly on the highway put our lives at risk which could have easily resulted in accidents or fatalities. As it stands, I personally strongly urge: - Fellow motorists to exercise extreme caution when refueling in this area. - The relevant authorities, including the Energy Regulation Board (ERB) and consumer protection bodies, to immediately investigate this matter. - Oasis Filling Station management to take accountability and urgently address the issue to prevent further damage and harm (though they're proving to be not compliant as I speak right now). I have been wondering why more passengers (including me) are choosing Spiro Rwanda electric bikes over fuel-powered bodas! Here is the logic; A litre of fuel is costing 2,938 Frw. On average, one litre allows a fuel-powered bike to travel about 40km. In comparison, a fully charged battery of a #Spiro electric bike costs 2,450 Frw and allows travel of up to 75 - 80km. That is nearly double the distance at a 20% lower cost. For Boda Boda guys, it means reduced operating expenses, and for us the passengers, it translates into more affordable fares. No wonder Spiro bodas are winning the streets! #EnergyOnTheMove

You’re on a journey on this kind of lonely road with your car and your car suddenly develops a fault, You can’t call for help and your lines can’t be reached due to network issues, what do you do? Except the car will stop and the engine won’t come up again, please reduce your speed and accelerate softly till you get to a nearby town, if it is an overheating issue, keep driving, put the gear in the neutral position and switch off the engine and let the car keep moving, switch it back on when you have to ascend a hilly road and the car can’t move freely on its own again. If the battery signal comes up while driving, chances are that your alternator has failed, or the alternator belt is damaged, apply the same method and switch off your AC, radio system or anything that may drain the battery while driving till you get to a safe place. If it is a flat tyre, maintain a low speed till you get to a safe place to change and use your spare, keep moving. Yes!!! Damage that tyre till you get to a safe place, just keep moving and make sure you have a spare tyre always and it is in a good condition. If the engine suddenly goes off on top speed, chances are that a fuse is damaged and this is why I will make a thread on how to identify different fuses and how to have them fixed temporarily in case of Emergencies. If your car jerks or experiences a lazy movement while driving, it’s likely to be a fuel related issue, fuel pump most likely, switch off the engine intermittently and put the gear in Neutral position, keep moving… if the fuel pump rests for about 5mins, it’ll pick up back when you ignite the engine, this will/may at least take you to a safe place or where you can have access to network to make calls. If you hear strange sounds like knocking sounds or the oil signal starts to blink, relax and reduce your speed, keep moving. Manage it till you get to a safe place or can have access to network. If your gear/transmission system isn’t selecting well, apply the same method, reduce your speed but keep moving, slow movement is better than no movement, your life and safety matters a lot. Please note that there are some Mechanical issues that nothing can solve on the road except patience and just to pray to God for safety and help, for example, you run into a pothole unknowingly and the oil pan hits the road and your engine or gear oil leaks away, or your ball joint or tie rod head pulls out, I’ll suggest you leave the car there, roll up your windows and lock up the car and start trekking till you get network or help, staying with the car may make you vulnerable to attacks or attract unexpected company, just keep walking away from the car for safety. Most importantly, please stay safe and be conscious of your environment. Be friendly with your Mechanic too or any Mechanic you see on the road. Don’t manage faults in cars and risk traveling with it.

Erin launched the site at the end of April, and it took off immediately, they got flooded with reports within hours, so many it briefly crashed the submission form. As of this week, they’ve received over 2,700 community reports from 49 states. Water usage is the top complaint at about 41%, followed by strain on the power grid, health issues, noise, and impacts on wildlife. The map now shows 33 operational data centers, 44 under construction, and 27 proposed. She’s basically crowdsourcing the transparency Big Tech hasn’t been giving communities.

Logistical issues are stacking up with Caches running out of supplies and transport issues as well. I cover all of this on tomorrow’s Substack podcast episode.
