I feel like because Bob the Sponge from Intertidal Zone seemed so different from SpongeBob so Plankton's voice would've made sense for that version.

I wonder if the scene in the SpongeBob episode "Plankton" where Plankton calls Squidward a mediocre clarinet player was a reference to Mr. Lawrence auditioning for SpongeBob using what would become the Plankton voice.

The Plankton screams and yells are some of the best I’ve heard.
