Big milestone for Mumbai’s Underground Mobility Project: Orange Gate–Marine Drive Tunnel Begins Main Drive The Orange Gate–Marine Drive Road Tunnel, one of India’s most complex urban road tunnelling projects, has reached another historic milestone with the main tunnelling drive now officially underway. This is a pivotal moment for Mumbai’s underground mobility network. Purpose-built for Mumbai’s challenging coastal geology, the Tunnel Boring Machine — India’s largest slurry shield TBM for an urban road tunnel — achieved a crucial breakthrough recently, and has since advanced rapidly, excavating an impressive 70 metres within a few days. Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri Devendra Fadnavis and Hon’ble Deputy Chief Minister & MMRDA Chairman Shri Eknath Shinde had launched the TBM on December 3, 2025. The project involves the construction of twin tunnels spanning over 7 km. The first tunnel, currently under construction, extends 3.45 km, reaching depths of up to 52 metres, while passing beneath the Central and Western Railway corridors and Mumbai Metro Line 3 with exceptional safety and engineering precision. Once complete, the project will reduce travel time between Orange Gate and Marine Drive to just 5 minutes, enabling seamless East-West connectivity, direct integration with the Coastal Road and Atal Setu, and significantly reducing congestion, fuel consumption and emissions. Following the launch, the project has achieved several key milestones, including the lowering of the backup system unit of the TBM and connecting it to the TBM shield, before successful completion of the initial tunnelling drive. It has now commenced the main drive operations. Progressing rapidly December 3, 2025: ✔️ TBM launched December, 2025- January 2026: ✔️ Backup system unit lowered and connected to the TBM shield ✔️ Hydraulic and electrical connections completed ✔️ Flowmeters, densitometers, pressure sensors calibrated ✔️ Probe drill unit installed and tested January 8, 2026: ✔️ Initial drive begins; temporary rings erected. January 26, 2026: ✔️ Permanent rings erection begins January 31, 2026: ✔️ Initial drive completed February 26, 2026: ✔️ Transition to main drive completed February 28, 2026: ✔️ Main drive operations commence. Urban working. Suburban living. Mumbai in Minutes. That is the future unfolding across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. This isn't just about building infrastructure. It is about transforming the way millions of people live, work and travel. Imagine living in Thane, Vasai, Virar or Navi Mumbai while reaching your workplace in Nariman Point or BKC in a fraction of the time it takes today. That is the transformation being enabled by India's second-largest Metro network, Asia's largest sea bridge, the Mumbai ring roads network, the integrated Paatal Lok Tunnel Network, the Mumbai–Ahmedabad Bullet Train corridor, and a host of next-generation mobility projects. In this special conversation hosted by Columbia Business School, Columbia University, New York, and Brookfield, one of the world's leading investment management firms, Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee, IAS, Metropolitan Commissioner, MMRDA, shares why this vision extends far beyond infrastructure. It is about creating a world-class Mumbai Metropolitan Region, where connectivity expands opportunity, every project improves quality of life, and urban working and suburban living become the defining rhythm of a future-ready metropolis. At the heart of this transformation lies Mumbai 3.0—a fourth-generation, greenfield city designed to attract the industries of tomorrow, from artificial intelligence and data sciences to semiconductors, while placing social infrastructure, sustainability and environmental responsibility at the centre of development from day one. As MMRDA helps reshape the MMR, it is also preparing concrete, science-led initiatives to address climate change and build a greener, more resilient and world-class metropolis for generations to come. The future is Maharashtra. Within Maharashtra, the future is MMR. A huge mobility leap for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. India’s largest and longest urban road tunnel, the Thane–Borivali Twin Tunnel Project, has just crossed a historic milestone. MMRDA has successfully completed the Thane-side portal excavation and lowered the 13.34-metre single-shield Tunnel Boring Machine cutterhead, the largest ever deployed in India for an urban infrastructure project. This milestone signals the start of the actual tunnelling phase of this pathbreaking project. The 11.8-kilometre underground twin tunnel will seamlessly connect Thane’s Ghodbunder Road with the Western Express Highway in Borivali, cutting travel time from 60–90 minutes to just 15 minutes, and redefining how lakhs of Mumbaikars move. Passing beneath the eco-sensitive Sanjay Gandhi National Park, the tunnels are being built using the most advanced TBM technology to ensure safe, efficient and eco-friendly construction with minimal ground disturbance. Each tunnel will feature three lanes, including a dedicated emergency lane, with cross-passages every 300 metres. The tunnels will be equipped with advanced ventilation systems, modern firefighting equipment, smoke detectors and illuminated LED signboards. Once completed, this landmark project will drastically reduce travel time, ease congestion, lower emissions and deliver a faster, cleaner and smarter commute for citizens. The successful lowering of the TBM cutterhead is not just an engineering achievement. It is proof that Mumbai is ready to take on the most complex underground mobility challenges, head-on. Through projects like the Thane–Borivali Twin Tunnel, MMRDA is reimagining and redefining mobility in the MMR. #MMRDA #TransformingMMR #ReimaginingMMR #TwinTunnelProject #HistoricMilestone #LargestTunnel #MMRDA50 #LargestTBM #ThaneBorivaliTunnel #TunnelBoringMachine #TunnelSafety #MumbaiMatters #UrbanDevelopment #MumbaiInMinutes #ReshapingMMR #RebootingMumbai #MumbaiInfrastructure #UrbanMobility #SmartTransport CMO Maharashtra Devendra Fadnavis Eknath Shinde - एकनाथ शिंदे Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee PIB India MAHARASHTRA DGIPR

Mumbai's Shunya is rising. Centuries ago, Aryabhata introduced the world to Shunya, a simple yet revolutionary idea that transformed mathematics, science and our understanding of the universe. Today, inspired by that timeless legacy, Mumbai is building a landmark unlike any other. Rising above the Vakola Nallah, the Shunya Bridge is steadily taking shape. A key part of Mumbai Metro Line 2B, this iconic structure will serve as both a critical transport link and a symbol of engineering excellence. With the iconic zero-shaped pylon now complete, construction has advanced to the bridge's back span, where 11 of the 12 precast segments have already been erected and cast-in-situ works are progressing steadily. The next milestone will be the bridge's defining 80-metre main span, the critical link that will complete the iconic structure and bring this vision to life. Every segment launched. Every weld perfected. Every milestone achieved brings Mumbai's newest landmark one step closer to reality. A tribute to India's scientific legacy. A landmark for generations to come. A symbol of how timeless ideas continue to inspire modern engineering. Connecting not just places, but the past, present and future.
