Bad teams don’t tank because they are dying to lose for six months straight, alienate fans and create bad habits for their young players. They do it because they have to – the NBA just doesn’t give bad teams a lot of avenues to get better. And a number of the “tanking solutions” that have been proposed would actually make it even HARDER for bad teams to climb out of the bottom of the standings. Flatten the lottery odds? So you’re proposing giving good teams a *better* chance to get the best rookies and bad teams a *worse* chance than they have now? Yeah, that’s bad for the league, bad for fans, bad for players. The NBA needs to focus on creating more pathways to improve, so tanking isn’t the only way - and in my opinion that means holding bad owners accountable too.

Expanding the NBA lottery from 14 to 18 teams is more likely to fuel tanking than put an end to it The proposed solution rewards the bottom 10 records with an equal 8% shot at the top pick, while the remaining teams would all have an equal 2.5% chance None of this actually addresses the root issue: Losing has been made an EXTREMELY valuable strategy in a sport where competition is supposed to be paramount Brian Windhorst on The Hoop Collective Pod, "“I had an executive tell me the number one pick this year is worth $100 million. That if you gave the opportunity to buy that pick, teams would pay $100 for it" All an 18 team lottery does is pave the way for 4 more teams to prioritize tanking. Do not kid yourself. If losing games is even remotely tied to receiving a better pick teams will do it...because they are not dumb
