Bad teams don’t tank because they are dying to lose for six months straight, alienate fans and create bad habits for their young players. They do it because they have to – the NBA just doesn’t give bad teams a lot of avenues to get better. And a number of the “tanking solutions” that have been proposed would actually make it even HARDER for bad teams to climb out of the bottom of the standings. Flatten the lottery odds? So you’re proposing giving good teams a *better* chance to get the best rookies and bad teams a *worse* chance than they have now? Yeah, that’s bad for the league, bad for fans, bad for players. The NBA needs to focus on creating more pathways to improve, so tanking isn’t the only way - and in my opinion that means holding bad owners accountable too.

It used to be limited to a small group of teams. I think at one point I could genuinely stand up and say rebuilding and not say tanking…. Our fans were speaking loud and clearly about this being unacceptable. Oddly in some markets, fans were cheering on their teams saying ‘of course this is the right strategy!’

Again, I think a bit of a group think there obviously by definition it can’t be successful for all the teams that were engaging in that strategy. But on the other hand the analytics which all the sports are using today suggest that it’s a potentially a winning strategy and that is to race to the bottom in order to get higher draft picks. And then even fans in particular cities and even media in those cities to a certain degree were rooting for their teams to tank and saying, you know, how well can your team be managed if you’re sort of just in the middle?
