I got a little pushback from my recent post about I.C.E. — and it deserved a follow up conversation. Some people said I’m making a “both sides” error. A false equivalence. Have you ever met a celebrity who was genuinely kind to you? Shouldn’t more celebrities take a page from Billy Bob Thornton’s book? I keep seeing posts about him on Instagram and YouTube, and the comments are almost always the same: "He was kind." "He treated the crew well." "He talked to regular people like they mattered." "He wasn’t acting above everyone else." That stuff sticks with people far longer than another red carpet interview or political rant ever will. I do not know him and have never met him, but apparently, he walks the talk.

I’m pro documenting tings. I’m against the idea that if I step into a venue (or now just go outside) I’m opted into being someone’s content in perpetuity. I’m against randoms filming people they don’t know and posting them to humiliate. I hate having to accommodate someone wanting to ‘get their shot’ while I perform. I hate watching artists and seeing 6 camera people on stage moving around them. I hate being on slide 17 of a festivals carousel on Instagram enjoying a moment of peace photographed without my consent. Written and oral story telling can do so many things images can’t, especially now we are swamped with them. Please use these devices more.

I really appreciate when people notice this about me. There’s actually a good reason why I talk the way I do, and it’s not an act, but it’s definitely intentional. The internet is obsessed with control. Cancel culture, woke left/right, censorship, etc. Most people want to say exactly what’s on their mind but they’re afraid they will lose followers, or other “influencers” will see them as a problem and won’t invite them to collab. They’re always trying to keep everyone happy and it’s fucking impossible. They’re being controlled by popularity, or tribalism, or cult mentality/group think. I don’t give a fuck if any of you like the way I talk, but I love it when you love it. I don’t care about these other fuckin people faking their way through the internet and joining mini cults. I am completely and unapologetically me, and I’m never going to let “engagement” change that. I care enough about you guys not to lie to you, and I care about what I say enough to say it genuinely and passionately. I’m not saying everyone should curse. I’m saying everyone should stop giving a fuck what other people think about them, because it doesn’t matter. Fuck the likes, the clicks, the ratios, the self censorship. Whether you’re being PG-13 or Rated R, just be yourself. If you’re one of those people, I’m probably eventually gonna follow you, because real recognizes real. In the last couple of weeks since “Israel on Trial: Examining the History, the Evidence, and the Law” has come out, I've gotten dozens and dozens of calls and emails and texts from people in my life. And what they’re telling me is that they have heard from people in their own lives—people at work, people at their kids' school, people in their families—who said they were on the fence about Israel, or they said bad things about Israel because of things they learned on TikTok or on the internet, and they didn't know any of the things that were in the book, and they're never going to do that again. And that's consistent with what I've seen around the country over the last three years. Every single time I go to a church of any denomination or a school or a college or a law school—maybe not right then and there, but in the days or weeks that follow, people will call and say, "You know what? I didn't know the things you talked about in your speech, and I'll never say there was genocide in Gaza again. I'll never call Israel an apartheid state again." The vast majority of Americans, they're people of good faith and open hearts. They don't necessarily care so much what's going on 3,000 miles away in a little country in the Mediterranean, but they do care about the law. If they are presented the facts and the evidence in a way that's based on reason and common sense—not emotion and vitriol and all the rest—they will be convinced.
