NASA’s JPL is developing EELS, a snake-like robot designed to explore icy worlds such as Saturn’s moon Enceladus. It is being tested on Earth in extreme environments. EELS has no confirmed launch date, but could support future missions to search for alien life.

This is the kind of exploration technology that becomes necessary when wheels are no longer enough. Saturn’s moon Enceladus is especially compelling because evidence from Cassini indicates a global subsurface ocean beneath its icy crust, with material from that ocean erupting into space through plumes near the south pole. A future mission attempting to move through fractures, ice, or other confined terrain would face an environment fundamentally different from Mars. That is where adaptable robotic concepts like EELS become interesting. The important distinction is that EELS is still a research and development concept, not a confirmed mission to Enceladus. But the larger objective is extraordinary: developing machines capable of reaching environments that may contain liquid water, chemistry, and conditions relevant to habitability. The next great discovery in planetary science may require a robot that can go somewhere no rover could ever reach. And beneath the ice of an ocean world is one of the most intriguing places to look.

This is so amazing! I am excited to actually explore different planets. Totally gives me that Star Trek vibe‼️💯👍 SIGN me up Scotty‼️

Search our oceans first

Cool 🤖

What propels it? Or make it displace forward?

Well, start with gravity as the error 🙄🧲
