BREAKING: NASA has launched four astronauts on a mission to circle the Moon, marking the first human journey back to deep space in 54 years, and the farthest distance from Earth humans will have ever traveled to date. The four astronauts on this Artemis II mission will travel 600,000 miles around the moon. During their 10-day trip, they’ll test life support systems in the Orion capsule for future crewed missions to the moon’s surface. A moon landing would occur during Artemis III, which is currently targeted to launch sometime in 2027.

Artemis was a great test of going around the moon. However the Artemis rocket system has the same problem as the Apollo missions to the moon. It costs too much. The Artemis rocket, SLS, was designed by the US Senate. $4 billion per launch. And can only launch once each 2 years. We can’t build a moon base with this system. SLS was a rocket designed by politicians to create jobs for the old Space Shuttle contractors. They spent 15 years and $25 billion developing it, and it will never be cost effective at $4 billion per launch. It is an obsolete rocket already. It works, but it will eventually die due to budget cuts.

David Friedberg: The Moon is the Next Industrial Frontier “ I think the moon could end up being the next industrial frontier for humanity. And the reason is, if you can get to the moon, it has an extraordinary abundance of material that we can mine, process, and manufacture into goods. And ultimately the cost to ship those goods back to the Earth is zero. And the reason is that on the moon, you can take advantage of the low gravity, it's about 1/6 the gravity, and the complete lack of an atmosphere, meaning that it's frictionless to move material off of the moon and very low energy to move it off of the moon. In fact, the design for moving material off of the moon is to use what's called a mass driver, which is like a train track, like a rail, like an electric rail. And you could put a package on that rail and use electricity to accelerate that package to 100 G-Force, shoot it back to the earth, or theoretically shoot it to Mars, and it will go to the exact point on the Earth you want it to go to, reenter the atmosphere, and land with a simple parachute where you want it to go. So we could run continuous mining, continuous manufacturing processes on the moon at a fraction of the cost of what it would take to do it here on Earth.”

Having fresh fruit and vegetables on the Space Station is a rare treat. Space food requires a long shelf life so we only receive fresh fruits or vegetables during a new crew arrival or a resupply mission. Having a tangible reminder of life on Earth is a morale booster and a welcome addition to a somewhat repetitive menu. But for future astronauts on deep space missions this luxury simply won't exist. That's why space agencies are investing in plant growth systems and sustainable food solutions that can help support astronauts on future missions.
