Honestly no ONE can tell me about the difference in feeling when I hear Neo soul vs other R&B. I just think the viewpoint that it’s a cage is a very yt suoremacist viewpoint. Like other genres there are subgenres.

this was such an interesting watch. i will say though, with this logic (while it makes sense), couldn’t we say the same for almost all genres? i don’t think most artists set out to create a new category of music, i feel like people just make music, and as different sounds become-

See here's my thing n I've been feeling like this for a while.. Whats wrong with boxes lol I get it, don't box artists in when they go outside of that style but boxes make things easy to find. For someone as picky as me, I wanna type in Neo Soul & get a particular production style & feel with every song that shows up in the results. Just like if I type New Jack Swing, I want that particular style & feel of songs. I think we need more boxes lol I should be able to type "Modern Y2K" & Joey Bada$$'s Supaflee & Doja's "Ouchies" pops up n other songs like it that take me back to 2000-2003

@MrGee54 Neo Soul was a marketing tool, but it helped push a lot of artists that wasn't getting airplay otherwise. If it wasn't for that label, artists that were making alternative R&B wasn't getting played.

reminds me of how Japanese game devs hated having their games be called JRPGs because they didn't wanna be put in a box. as someone who grew up as a black kid loving JRPGs and neo soul, it's funny how fans grew to embrace labels that were maligned by the artists being labeled

I have read and heard this argument multiple times, nobody like the term triphop movement,it was just creative people wanted to expand the sound of hip-hop,sampling and electronic music, the same goes to terms like acid jazz, psychedelic rock, alternative hiphop

i dont mind the "neo soul" label bc as a consumer it made things easier to buy/collect. the only conflict i see here is between the artists and the term "neo soul"

It was all marketing!!! kedar Massinger’s vision that HIT!!! Amd still, they created a unique sound that i miss!!!!

Facts. I was active as a dj when this happened, and love the music, but this was marketing. Glad you mentioned the UK. Omar/sade/soul 11 Soul/Don E/loose ends & so many more. There was organic soul coming from US too before mid 90s. Most labels are just that tho I guess
