The average person will soon be as capable as what a senior software engineer is today, as we shift from doing the work to directing it. Instead of coding line by line, you’ll run multiple agents in parallel, building the frontend, refactoring the database, shipping features, all in the background. On top of that, you’ll have a clean interface to design and interact with AI more creatively. Software creation is moving from execution to orchestration, and soon, it won’t be a specialised skill, it’ll be the baseline.

Anyone can use Cursor or any other tool and generate code. Being a coder and being a software engineer are different. 3. Computers used to be gated; now everyone has the power to make computers malleable. Everyone is a software developer now, but that does not mean they are software engineers 4. If you cannot demonstrate how a coding agent works, you are just a consumer and have imposed an artificial glass ceiling on your career as a software engineer. 5. If you are curious, you will have a job. If you have not been curious in the last two years, you are replaceable. 6. SaaS per-seat economics may become unstable as customers need fewer people to achieve results, prompting founders to think about new unit economics 7. Most companies will take two or three years (or more!) to figure out AI transformation. 8. That will be true very quickly for jobs that are digital, or really anything that involves a person at a computer or on a phone. AI will be able to do all of that very soon. For software engineering, we already have a situation where AI is better than at least 90% of humans at writing software, including 90% of professional software engineers. It really is getting to the point where it will be better than 99%, and then it will get to the point where there’s just no way to compete. It will get to what I call Stockfish level. Stockfish is a chess program that is so good at chess that it will easily beat Magnus Carlsen, or anyone, even while running on a small computer. I suspect you could probably run Stockfish on your phone and beat Magnus Carlsen. That’s how good it is at chess, and that’s how good AI will be at writing software. And that applies to everything.”
