Yesterday, on May 30, 2025, Kolkata Police unlawfully entered Sealdah Railway Station, harassed innocent passengers, forcibly checked identities in order to identify sacked Teachers, beat up commuters indiscriminately and forcibly detained Teachers who were simply commuting, not protesting or agitating within the Sealdah Station premises. These teachers, victims of the 2016 SSC Recruitment Scam, planned a peaceful march to Nabanna but were met with excessive force, including manhandling and dragging into prison vans like hardened criminals. This is a blatant violation of Railway Jurisdiction under the Union Ministry of Railways and an attack on democratic rights. This isn’t the first time, similar overreaches occurred in 2022 (BJP’s Nabanna Abhijan) at several Railway Stations across West Bengal and at Metro Stations in 2023-24 to suppress protests of TET Candidates and other deprived eligible WB Govt Job Seekers. Despite raising this with the Sealdah DRM, no action has yet been taken. So, I’ve urged Hon’ble Railway Minister; Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw Ji to intervene and ensure such violations by Kolkata Police & West Bengal Police stop immediately. The rights of passengers and the sanctity of Railway premises must be protected, it can't be a allowed to be turned into a platform where Kolkata Police & West Bengal Police trample upon democratic freedom at will. West Bengal withdrew from the Ayushman Bharat Scheme in January 2019. Is that good for the people of Bengal? Industries are leaving West Bengal. From 1 April 2011 to 30 September 2025, 448 listed companies and 6,447 unlisted companies have exited the state. Since 2014, ₹5.94 lakh crore has been given to West Bengal as tax devolution - a 4.4× increase compared to the ₹1.34 lakh crore provided during 2004–14. Under SASCI, ₹24,000 crore has been provided as 50-year interest-free loans. AIIMS Kalyani in West Bengal has been opened. Eleven medical colleges have been approved in West Bengal under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS). Under the NDA government, West Bengal received a record railway budget allocation of ₹13,955 crore for 2025–26, which is more than three times the average outlay of ₹4,380 crore during 2009–14. 101 Amrit Stations are being developed in West Bengal at a cost of ₹3,847.5 crore. 1,650 km of railway lines have been electrified - taking total electrification in West Bengal to over 98%. Over 2,300 km of National Highways have been constructed in West Bengal since April 2014. In August 2024, the Government of India approved the development of Bagdogra Airport in Siliguri, West Bengal, at an estimated cost of ₹1,549 crore. - Smt. Democracy is never of a kind where the same party will ever come to power. We have seen in our lifetimes, the change takes place at state level, at panchayat level, at municipal level, that's a democratic process. But one thing is for sure, there has to be continuity of development, continuity of our civilisational ethos, and that comes only from one aspect. We must respect democratic culture. India is perhaps the only country in the world that has constitutionally structured democracy at all levels. Before 30 years, we had constitutional democracy only in the State legislature and Parliament. But now we have constitutional democracy at the village level, at panchayat level, and the district level. #RajyaSabha
