Never understood why stairs waste so much space

I made mine into my dogs house

I knew a kid that had his bedroom under the stairs at his aunt and uncles. . It wasn’t very nice though. He played with a stick and said weird stuff. I believe he went to school overseas.

Closet under our stairs

Here's a radical idea...instead of building storage for stuff you don't use, buy less stuff. It's just that simple.

By the way what's supporting the mid landing on the side they cut out because that landing also supports the lower stairs. By the look of it they cut out the load barring wall for the landing

Love your work! The finish work at the end was genius and simple . The MDF or High Finish Particle Board painted nice work. Love the matching 4 sided triangular pieces. To see you pre mark the slide level was that extra piece of care! A superb idea for those under the stair spots

That's because when they were invented there was space to waste.

They don’t. There’s usually a closet or some storage below them

Oftentimes there's a basement stairwell underneath it.

It finally dawned on me, the house I grew up in had nothing under the stairs that went to the second floor. There was no closet, it was not open in any way, just walled over.... makes me wonder what, if anything, was under there.

I believe it’s a fire Marshall violation to store anything under the stairs because if it catches fire you have no escape route.
