The U.S. already has 5,500 data centers that use 449 million gallons of water a day. They’re being built on farmland so in addition to taking away our water they’re taking away our food supply all for mass surveillance, AI slop, and to make billionaires richer. These data centers will ultimately lead to our extinction if we don’t stop them.

A bill was introduced called “the Data Center Water and Energy Transparency Act” to mandate reporting of energy and water consumption to states and the EPA This is an issue, here’s one example The Quality Technology Services data center in Fayette County used 29–30 million gallons of water went unmetered and unbilled for months without initial detection. When people say data centers use millions of gallons of water, they're describing an old technology. Before, water went into evaporative cooling towers. Warm water pulled heat off the AI chips, then evaporated into the air to shed it. It was effective, but it burned through fresh water continuously, which is where the headline numbers come from today around "data centers use a massive amount of water." The data centers we revealed at Build today don't work that way. The cooling loop is closed. Water is added once during construction and recirculates indefinitely between the servers and the chillers. No evaporation, no fresh-water resupply! Satya put the scale in plain terms: a full year of water use is roughly what a single restaurant uses. Keep in mind that for us, every liter and every watt is an optimization target. The economics and the environment push in the same direction!

Today we had a meeting where we were essentially asked to defend the water usage of data centers to our friends and family in conversation at the dinner table or online. They provided them with a graph to break down water usage (included) but I’ll go over it The chart compares “domestic water usage” (toilets, sinks, etc.) for a typical-sized closed-loop data center of 600,000 gallons per year against other things of “equivalent square footage”: Cornfield: 5.85 million gallons Vineyard: 5.60 million Golf course: 5.45 million Peanut farm: 2.88 million Movie theater: 935,000 5 households: 730,000 They make the point that “Data centers aren’t the big water users you think” But that’s not really true “It's still using an incredible amount of water — and the key piece of evidence here was when someone gets pissed at a data center's water usage, ask them if they like golf. And when they say yes, let them know that a golf course uses 9 times as much water much water as a data center. That'll shut them up, because no one disapproves of golf courses using an exorbitant amount of water…” Not to mention, this is incredibly misleading The 600,000 gallons is mostly just building operations of things like sinks and bathrooms.
