Mamdani: And I think what we've seen under this current administration here in New York City is an unwillingness to stand up for the laws we already have here. We have sanctuary city policies, which used to be defended by Democrats and Republicans alike. These are policies that do not allow ice admission into schools, into hospitals, into any city property or properties of city contractors unless they can show a judicial warrant signed by a judge. And what we know is, time and time again, the videos we're watching, they're not videos of warrants being shown. They are videos of brutal intimidation. And it is time to have a mayor of the city who recognizes this risk is a present day one, and will stand up for each and every one of the 3 million immigrants who call the city home. I'm one of them, and an understanding that an attack on any New Yorker is an attack on the entirety of the city.

Robert Burke, who’s running for Congress in Massachusetts’ 8th District, put up an American flag at Boston City Hall Plaza to mark America’s 250th birthday. City officials quickly made him take it down. This happened right after Mayor Michelle Wu’s office raised the Somali flag there for Somali Independence Day. Burke says it’s backwards, celebrating a foreign flag while shutting down our own, especially with the Fourth of July coming up. Because Mayor Michelle Wu issued an official mayoral proclamation declaring it Somali Independence Day and endorsed the event. Under Boston’s flag policy, the mayor can approve foreign national flags for recognized communities through proclamations and ceremonies, which they’ve done for years for many countries. Burke’s unsanctioned American flag display didn’t have that approval, so city staff made him remove it. It’s sparked a ton of backlash for the double standard right before the Fourth of July. They removed it because Burke didn’t get official permission through the mayor’s office or city council. Boston’s flag policy for City Hall Plaza requires either a mayoral proclamation or a council resolution for any non-standard flag display.
