Police officers pulled over the vehicle after they witnessed the driver, Thomas Michael Raiola, on January 23. Authorities said the responding officer noticed the smell of alcohol and asked the driver to perform a voluntary roadside maneuver, which he at first accepted but then changed his mind. When police placed Raiola in handcuffs, he stated, “My kids are in the trunk.” Police said there were freezing temperatures during the stop, but the kids were unharmed. Several bottles of alcohol were recovered from inside the car.
