I have a feeling this is bound to cause problems sooner or later.

So... if you get stuck in a muddy field where the rows are fairly precise in width... you just smeared a spot simply by shifting from forward to reverse.

thats really cool, it would allow you to have one tractor work on multiple fields with different bed spacings, and your mechanic doesnt have to remove tires and flip them or add spacers

It was an optional feature. Most farmers won't use it much. The problem is you have to loosen the rim clamps to do it. The clamps would sheer off at the bolt heads. Most farmers would just get them welded in place because it was such a hassle.

That looks like only a matter of time before something breaks and an expensive repair is needed.

Maybe there’s a good reason for that?

I remember this from when I was little. Changing the width to align the tracks in the field

I can sense nightmarish maintenance in that grip changing wheels. I guess the old "hop hop forward hop hop back - repeat" scheme is better than this.

Reverse pushes hub outward for easy access to remove tire or hub. Forward pulls hub inward and tire outward for more stable travel.

You tighten the bolts once the width is where you need it.

Power Adjust wheels. I have an old M5 Moline with those but have never once moved them.

Bar axle wheel track adjustment is easier, PAVT style can be prone to cracking.
