I'd never thought about using them. My math teachers, back in the day, were pretty dry and didn't teach us fun stuff like this. Someone like you would have made math more enjoyable.

Yup! This strategy is known as an "area model" or the "box method"... It serves to strengthen conceptual understanding of what is happening when each digit is multiplied by another...
