Of course you can make those same connections with the hated standard algorithm. At what point [if at all, and with time constraints allowing] should you try to equate the S.A as equivalent to the area model? [apologies, I haven't learned how to draw noses or ears yet]

@MissWillett18 maybe this is how I teach multiplying fractions next year? I’d have to play around with it first, but our kids rocked the box method this year
