Low trust society requires activation lock. Once certain people stop stealing and control their impulses to steal, we can talk about removing activation lock.

Want to be serious for a second or keep up this passive-aggressive attitude, where no one is allowed to disagree with you? 🤷‍♂️ You're an Apple #hater. Got it. That much is clear. But what exactly is your proposed solution here? Specifics, please. Force Apple to manage a system for manually unlocking devices based on some proof of rightful ownership? I see several issues with that. Ever heard of SIM-swapping? Yeah, social engineering is a whole industry and entire darknet services would be set up to help thieves unlock Apple devices at a small cut. I find great comfort in knowing that a thief would have zero - yes zero - way of unlocking my device, and it would thus be entirely worthless to him. It deters theft. Do I think Apple could better integrate the removal of activation lock when erasing a device? Yes. Do I think organizations are responsible for ensuring their devices are actually fully functioning, before handing them over to the secondhand market? Also yes. This issue is waaay more nuanced than you present it. But hey ... I'm just an Apple #fanboy, right? 🤦‍♂️

Well I tried 🤷‍♂️ Literally immune to any critique. "Here's my opinion and you're not allowed to disagree with me. I'll own you with a #hashtag if you try." 🙃 This platform really brings out the worst and most hostile nature of some people 😳

This is a reasonably effective theft deterrent. In a world where every walmart has a used phone buying kiosk, thieves have a digital fence who pays up front. By kneecapping the value of the average stolen device, they eat into these thief-enablers' pockets.

@RDKLInc Yep. As a reseller, the solution is to only buy devices after confirming the lock is off. Offer a fair price but refuse to pay until it’s demonstrated not to be stolen.

John Bumstead's profile picture
John Bumstead5 months ago

@Willrandship Nice thought, but unfortunately that’s not how the recycling industry works. Thousands are bought and sold in large lots with nobody (including original institutional owners) putting in the work to even know if it’s locked. Doesn’t even get look at until 5 owners in

Satsuki Hime 🐟🔱💀👁️‍🗨️👧🎼💛💚🤎5 months ago

@Willrandship That would be the fault of the industry. Call me a fangirl all you want, but if the thieves stopped making money from stealing IOS devices, they’d stop stealing IOS devices. They’d stop making money if the first point of contact checked for a lock.

Satsuki Hime 🐟🔱💀👁️‍🗨️👧🎼💛💚🤎's profile picture
Satsuki Hime 🐟🔱💀👁️‍🗨️👧🎼💛💚🤎5 months ago

@Willrandship Perhaps the argument could be made to Apple that if the device showed its serial number on the lock screen, you could provide it to them so that they can contact the person whose account is linked to it and ask them to remove it or reclaim it, that’s something Apple should do.

John Bumstead's profile picture
John Bumstead5 months ago

Apple has the serial -- the lock screen appearing in the first place is BASED on Apple seeing the serial and deciding to enforce the lock. Apple has ALL the history of all its devices and there's a myriad of ways they could provide a process to make a determination, but they don't. And by the way, 99% of locked devices are not stolen. The idea that it is is just marketing.

I’m fine with activation lock. It prevents theft. when. I don’t care if people can’t resell it when I’m done using what I paid for. I don’t care that you can’t “donate” it to “third world” countries. I paid for it, I want it locked.

The amount of stupidity, brainwashing and outright idiocy regarding how much power a company has over things you have paid is astounding. As a service center for Apple, we have tons of apple products that are locked and the client, has died, cant access the original recover mail, cant reset their passwords. Specially sad is the case of dead users whose family want to recover photos or data, even legal receipts. As a 45 year Apple User, I have seen how abusive all companies have turned, the planned obsolesence and the small things they make to F you up. I have over 300 ipads where the client abandoned their product due to activation lock, we used to keep them turned on in case they were stolen, only one came to pick up their stolen Ipad in around 4 years. Macbooks and Iphones with the same problem. Perfectly good hardware just collecting dust. Activation Lock should ask once every 6 months if you want to keep it, and let you have it on, doable by the cloud or with the device itself (unlocked). My Ipad doesnt have activation lock, and Apple keeps bugging me to complete the process. Why not asking you if you want to keep it? That is if you dont answer it for 6 months or you dont renew it on the Icloud services the device unlatches from activation lock. But No apple keeps your ipad as a paperweight, because fanboys keep buying and blaming the user. P.D. Keep voting with your $$$, just dont cry when you lose your data because youy device is locked.

I agree, it’s actually quite the problem when it comes to trying to resell and when someone does buy a bricked product, it cannot be undone. But this solely doesn’t fall upon Apple. What happened to self-accountability? Apple or not- tablet, phone, washing machine or coffee machine or not, isn’t it up to the buyer to be checking functionality before buying second-hand? I’ve bought several apple products second hand. I have always made sure they are unlocked on the spot before handing over cash. In many instances the sellers having no idea they didn’t wipe devices properley and I had them sort it out.

georgeboy ⭐️'s profile picture

Literally watched it. The whole thing. And you didn’t once mention self-accountability. On both sides. Not the seller, or buyer. I actually think you might be a tad slow. It’s like saying “finance kills cars” because finance is locked to the car, and not a person. So if a person buys a financed car, and they take on the debt without realising, that’s the financiers fault… Sir, are you this retarded????

We do try to sit on them a while to see if they are eventually freed up when the old owner notices, but yes ultimately we send most for metal recovery. It's really frustrating :(

John Bumstead's profile picture
John Bumstead5 months ago

Sell the newer ones to Chinese refurbishers! They know how to make use of them.

Free I.T. Stafford's profile picture
Free I.T. Stafford5 months ago

We don't actually sell them for ourselves, we send them on to another charity in Stoke who use the cash from the metals to employ and train local disadvantaged folk, so there is a silver lining of sorts :) (formerly CRC)

John Bumstead's profile picture
John Bumstead5 months ago

But if you could get, say, $50/ea for modern-ish iPads by sending them to China via prepaid labels that the buyer is providing, wouldn't you find that more compelling? That can happen.

Free I.T. Stafford's profile picture
Free I.T. Stafford5 months ago

We're not really in it for the money, if there's something we can't use we just pass it on to someone who can, in whatever manner they choose, as long as it's for community benefit it all goes in the same pot round here really :)

I think the lock should automatically turn off after 5 years because then the iphone/ipad is out of date and won't sell for much so people won't get an incentive to steal

It’s not just that customers don’t remove the device from their iCloud, it’s that the process is entirely broken. My sister gave me her old iPad & I watched her delete it from the account, only for me to reset the device & it say that it is still locked to iCloud.

Even the dumbest meanest blackest street thug knows about activation lock so I'd say Apple's strategy is working pretty great.

JokerHa13's profile picture
JokerHa135 months ago

100% agree, and I’m definitely an Apple fanboy 🤣 But this is such dumb feature. Example a friend just gave me an iPad 2 the other day, part of a b-day present. Because I was talking nostalgia about the 2nd gen. They haven’t used it in in a long time and was just sitting in a tub. Clearly obsolete and not really usable, but today’s standards. Was wiped, but still activation locked. Luckily she was able to remove it from FindMy. And now I can wax poetic with it lol. But especially for wiped and obsolete devices. It doesn’t make any sense to lock them out. And who steals a 10, 15, 20 year old device, thinking they will profit off of it. Hopefully Apple find some sense or some sort of solution. Especially for collectors like myself. That just want to have these older devices for fun and preservation.

I once removed the icloud lock on an old IPad by removing a tiny resistor from the logic board. Couldn’t believe it when i turned it on. 😁 There is always a way to circumvent these locks. I remember in the 00s you could also replace the imei number from a blacklisted phone with an imei number from a fresh cheap phone with a couple of cables.

John Bumstead's profile picture
John Bumstead5 months ago

There is until there isn’t, and now there isn’t. And regardless, you can’t hack 10 million devices. And a hack does not solve the greater problem

ɢᴀᴅɢᴇᴛɢᴀᴢ ⌁⌁'s profile picture
ɢᴀᴅɢᴇᴛɢᴀᴢ ⌁⌁5 months ago

How does it not solve the problem? Before the process you have a paperweight. After the process you have a working device.

John Bumstead's profile picture
John Bumstead5 months ago

A device that has been hacked and which can return to locked status upon reset is not a fully working device, nor one which can be legitimately and ethically sold to unsuspecting consumers. Does not solve the problem of the 10s of millions of devices that are being locked and destroyed

It prevents theft, and the desire to for people to steal such devives, it's a good thing. If you're a repair technician you can harvest them for parts, but advocating for weaker security is just daft.

J Wheels 🇺🇸's profile picture
J Wheels 🇺🇸5 months ago

I feel like it would be really easy to setup a system where whatever device that person is on gets a notification that the device is attempting to activate, would they like to remove it from their account? OR force sellers to remove it before accepting them anywhere, including donations. There is an argument to be made for the security, but ok if your thing is stolen, have it broadcast to cops when someone tries to activate and you report it stolen. Thieves learn quick if there are consequences. It isn’t hard. Apple is doing this on purpose to prevent people using low cost devices.

Broken Media's profile picture
Broken Media5 months ago

The people who recycle/repurpose these devices SHOULD KNOW and SHOULD TELL people who drop devices with them HOW to remove the device from their account BEFORE accepting them. Simple. Otherwise, they shouldn’t be in the business of repurposing these tablets. Are you speaking at the behest of black market / criminal actors, who would definitely advocate for the removal of these protections?

LONG LIVE LIBERTY, DAMNIT!!!!'s profile picture
LONG LIVE LIBERTY, DAMNIT!!!!5 months ago

When people do not remove and deactivate their "Find my <iDevice goes here>", this is the result. But there are many places where they can remove this. But it isn't exactly a legal way as it involves creating a fake serial number, so the device will get a fake serial number, bypassing the device activation lock.

John Bumstead's profile picture
John Bumstead5 months ago

Serial changing is not possible as of Apple Silicon. And even if it was, it's a hack and not a solution to the greater problem.

LONG LIVE LIBERTY, DAMNIT!!!!'s profile picture
LONG LIVE LIBERTY, DAMNIT!!!!5 months ago

Yet, you can still have it bypassed. In Bangkok are many stores where they offer this service. It might be possible that its not the serial bypass method, but there are methods.

John Bumstead's profile picture
John Bumstead5 months ago

Again, good for them, but it's not the comprehensive overall solution we need that will help the 10s of millions of devices currently being destroyed
