Sanders: What we have here, and it’s a real issue, is that if you’re progressive, you can go out there and give a great speech, fine. You’re saying all the right things. You’re right on the issues. Great. Can you run a government? Can you be a good mayor? Can you be a good governor? All right. And what Mamdani is doing is showing that you can have a democratic socialist, progressive ideology and run a city. You know what? New York City had really serious snowstorms. It meant that people couldn’t get to work, kids couldn’t get to school, ambulances couldn’t get people to the hospital. You know what he did? He got the bloody snow off the ground and did a great job on that. People in New York City desperately need childcare, as they do in Vermont, as they do all over the country. He is now instituting free childcare for the people of New York City. That is really good. Working-class people need to buy affordable, decent-quality food for their kids. He’s starting to put grocery stores—municipally funded grocery stores—in low-income and working-class areas. That’s good. So the point is, we have got to have progressives who are not only right on the issues—and I speak as somebody who was a mayor for eight years—you’ve got to know how to run a government. You’ve got to cut through the bureaucracy. You’ve got to stand up for working-class people. You’ve got to create the best educational system in the world that we can. You’ve got to make the system work efficiently.

She said in both cases the displacement is caused by “corporate interests” buying up the land. This might be one of the most intellectually dishonest things I've ever heard. Jews are not "corporate interests," those insistent on living in the West Bank do so because there is a deep cultural and religious connection to that land in particular. Palestinians also have a deep connection to that land, thus the conflict is born. Also, you're comparing the district you run to Gaza? Really?

So apparently there is a 25 year window where we're normal adults. There are 25 year olds right now in juvenile detention facilities that are with 12 year olds. That is what California looks like. Democratic socialist Aber Kawas could become the first Palestinian American elected to statewide office in New York if she wins her race for State Senate in November. She just won the Democratic primary in her Queens district. Kawas says support for Palestine is becoming an important litmus test in progressive politics: "What we are seeing right now is a redefinition of what people want to define as progressive politics, and that Palestine needs to be part of that fold. Having an antiwar platform needs to be part of that. "If you are saying 'I want to deliver affordability,' if you're saying you're against ICE, then people will only see that as consistent in your politics if you're also saying that you're against a genocide in Palestine. So, in many ways we are transforming the Democratic party and also the progressive voice in the Democratic party to make sure that it includes speaking out about Palestine."

Shri Thanedar. McKinney is running on a Bernie Sanders-style platform, including support for Medicare for All. Thanedar has flip-flopped throughout his political career. In 2018, during his run for Michigan governor, consultants reportedly advised him on whether to campaign as a Republican or Democrat; he chose the Democratic label and presented himself as a Bernie progressive. After losing that race, he self-funded a successful campaign for the state legislature in 2020. Two years later, in 2022, he spent millions more to win a seat in Congress. If I were a New Yorker and I could still vote in that state, that is who I would be choosing for Governor of my state… It is one of the great states. Eric and I lived there for so long and were residents of New York City and New York State. Sadly we have left because of the bad policies of people who seem to hate the residents of New York. I would love to see her as Governor, absolutely.”

Straight to the sympathy playbook: “a five-foot three Asian woman under 130 pounds (quite thick for an Asian) getting sprayed straight in the eye by a man three times my size.” She was there rioting and blocking federal operations with the rest of the crowd. Now she’s using her height and weight to paint herself as helpless. Sorry, but if you’re old enough to run for Congress and show up to riot, you’re old enough to accept the consequences without the pity party.
