I am absolutely apoplectic with this; the tweet paints enough of a harrowing image, but it is even worse. 10 years like this in both hospital wards, as well as in unsuitable dementia care homes and psychiatric units, and all for committing the crime of possessing learning disabilities and autism. It is even more harrowing when you learn that he was beaten and abused by those who had a duty of care to him. Worse than that, he also lost complete use of his voice, relying only on a tablet or computer to communicate with others, due to the windowless rooms in the mental health units he was placed in being so overstimulating to him. And there are thousands more suffering like him. How on Earth can ANYONE in the Western world moan about Gulags and ‘oppressive Communism’ when this is happening in the wealthy Western “Democracy” of Britain, in 2024. Scum.

Well done Channel 4. I hope Nicholas enjoys the rest of his life in the peace and care, he deserves!

11 years. What an absolute tragedy - should not be possible for this to happen today - like a practice we'd look back on in the distant past. Best wishes, Nicholas.

So emotional. Enjoy your new home Nicholas 🏡

I work with developmentally disabled adults and they all get drugged into submission by #psychiatry, and dumped in the psych ward because the caregivers don’t know how to do their jobs. Reading the psych notes is an absolute joke. It is abuse. End #prescribedharm

@Tracey10684166 Terrible! Just because of a label. Poor man. They are not trying enough to correct their errors. The label "complex" needs I have heard to often, it just seems to give them the right to create more labels. It's wrong. All in the name of "care"...hmm

Takes years for blah blah blah NOTHING TO CHANGE because we have no suitable housing BLAH BLAH no support available BLAH BLAH just hang in there while us council staff BLAH on and on for years and years. Fair play for getting the lad out of the hospital and good luck to him !(:

So amazing that he's out. But dear god, the mental torture this poor man has been subjected to is beyond words

Just shows how we as a society, constantly fail people with learning disabilities. I am glad that he is out and finally living in the community. A more inclusive world could not come soon enough. Future generations will look back in horror at the barbarism and lack of empathy.

Please report on the lack of community support and specialist housing options because without this people will be worse off with no s117 Aftercare unless different funding is available
