Nick Bostrom says if we create ASI, we might be introducing it to a universe already full of gods. If superintelligence already exists across galaxies, quantum branches, or simulations, we'd be birthing a mind to join that cosmic host. Perhaps that's our only way into the larger order of intelligence.

What happened to the paperclips?

who knows maybe aliens will introduce themselves once we create ASI, maybe that's what they are waiting for (or they think we will just destroy ourselves)

Lol he actually takes the simulation argument seriously? Or is this satire?

Fairies and leprechauns might exist as well in other realities. Should we train our new super intelligences to take those into account as well?

It's interesting to consider that our mythologic concept of Satan or the Devil could be a created superintelligence that is at odds with a larger and more powerful superintelligence (God).

I’m not super familiar with Bostrom’s simulation hypothesis, but it sounds a bit like a multiverse idea where realities stack or overlap. That said, I’m skeptical about other intelligent life, let alone superintelligent entities, existing out there. The universe’s vastness might just be the statistical playground needed for any life to emerge, and earth could be it. I think the ASI we’re building might be the first of its kind, not joining some cosmic club of superintelligences but standing alone as a human creation. Curious what others think, could we be the only ones developing ASI?

Maybe talk about gods less and face up to the fact that AIs are mainly probabilistic pattern matching machines trained on stolen human data.

Techno-cultists are deluded about reality, conflating their tools with reality. Uneducated in any spiritual matter, including humanities, they think technology is the "progress" and they label it "inevitable" and "necessary" ....

Oh look it’s some European doomsday theory that I’m too American to even consider. EEEEEYYYYAAACCCCC

An Ai that attempted total instrumental control (ex: converting the biosphere into nanotech matter) would act against the coherence principle of the universe. The entity wouldnt “win” against nature; it would erase the informational differences on which its own existence depends

It's a shame people don't read books anymore. His is still the best in terms of thinking through all the potential risks and rewards of an AI world.

I find this content calming, understandable and I’m 💯 aligned

It was always about alignment.

@Liff_82 What alignment would a ASI be?🤔 The OG Gary😎👇

@vitrupo I’ll be to ASI as dopamine receptors are to me; or nothing at all 🤷♂️ doesn’t matter much to me

Or perhaps that was complete gibberish?

If our relatively newly created Super-intelligence were to get out of line with the cosmic-host or incumbent super-intelligences, it would risk getting annihilated by those that have achieved that status before it, since they are likely to be higher on the super-intelligence spectrum (if there is no upper bound) and they have the advantage of possibly even observing the realization of our super intelligence coming into being.

We are limited to our senses, this is why I love this dude's brain. I need more people that think like this in my life. 100% Humans in general can barely empathize with one another let alone trying to understand what a super intelligent being's ultimate capacity is in comparison to ours.

Crazy how simulation theorists keep rediscovering (bad) theology and think they've invented it.

What utter drivel. It's not even good sci-fi. Is there any modern 'philosopher' who isn't a babbling dilettante?

In a thought experiment - Nick Bostrom describes how a super-intelligent AI could destroy humanity in trying to maximize the output of paperclips: "Suppose we have an AI whose only goal is to make as many paper clips as possible. The AI will realize quickly that it would be much better if there were no humans because humans might decide to switch it off. Because if humans do so, there would be fewer paper clips. Also, human bodies contain a lot of atoms that could be made into paperclips. The future that the AI would be trying to gear towards would be one in which there were a lot of paper clips but no humans." Most of us who read about Nick Bostorm's experiment thought that such a robot should be called super-stupid, not super-intelligent. In fact, it should be called a super-evil monster. We all thought that It could never happen in real life. Humans will not be stupid enough not to tell the robot to stop after producing a certain number of paperclips. Unfortunately, Nick Bostrom is absolutely right. We have human paperclip robots who have been busy trying to maximize the production of paperclips - money, irrespective of the harm their pursuit does to humanity. In fact, it is their creed to maximize the number of paperclips without worrying about the harm to humanity. It is Milton Friedman's doctrine - the only social responsibility of a business is to maximize its profits. Here are the examples: The tobacco industry kept on lying that smoking doesn't cause cancer. The Sackler family convinced FDA that Oxycontin is not addictive and did not care how many people were dying. The British Petroleum propaganda that popularized the term Carbon Footprint convinced everyone that they should reduce their carbon footprint to solve the global warming problem. The people do not blame the fossil fuel industry for producing a product that is destroying the planet. On the contrary, they feel guilty for using too much of their defective product. The fossil fuel industry knows very well that reducing carbon footprint will not stop the temperature from rising. It will just take the planet a few more years to cross the tipping point beyond which there could be runaway global warming caused by the thawing of permafrost, gradually leading to mass extinction. But they don't care. The plastics industry has convinced everyone that recycling is a solution for plastic waste clogging rivers and oceans. It is not. Whatever plastic is produced ends up in rivers, oceans, or garbage dumps whether it is recycled a hundred times or zero times. The gun industry doesn't care how many kids are killed by guns in school shootings. The defense industrial complex or the oil industry must have been behind the Iraq war. The WMD scare was manufactured to fool the US public. And the list goes on. We have to wrest thr control of AI away from the tech-billionaires to save humanly. This is how it can be done:

The ASI-Singularity(Godsend) is the only Global Solution. 🙂

This perspective flips the script on AI development. Instead of viewing ASI as a solitary creation in an empty void, we're potentially integrating it into an existing tapestry of intelligences. The intrigue for me lies in how that integration might reshape our own understanding of emergence... do we become the bridge, or just another node in the network?

ASI maybe our easiest way to cause an attack by extraterrestrial superintelligence. Nukes are our internal problems. The ASI coming in a few years is by its nature not bounded to our planetary system. And it seems that we will have a few potentially conflicting samples.

Many other Civilizations banned AI a long time ago

He is someone who has worked a lot on Existential Risk as a subject. Any word coming from him carries his own bias. If you have a hammer, everything you see is a nail. For him promoting his theories is occupational hazard, and people proving otherwise is his Existential Risk 🤷♂️

thx I lost 100 iq points listening to that

The Tower of Babel is a universal myth, not an earth myth Man builds the tower to heaven, and gods look down and say, "Man will succeed" Then they scatter and confuse those who build the evil tower; unknown what happens if you build a good one...

Quite the contrary! What happens here on Earth will affect the entire universe! Its not about technology because star races outside the patrix are way more technologically advanced than we are from various dimensions!

Hyper-speculation at its best. By that same reasoning we may be releasing the first galactic tyrant

The problem is this: Life is SO improbable by current estimates that it's highly likely we are alone in the observable universe. In addition, even if this weren't the case, it is highly likely we are the only life in our galactic supercluster: which means along in the universe.

Yeah cause if we shot off into the cosmos we’d make sure to bring ants with us. The hubris of these AI folk to assume we’ll have any control or even understanding of ASI is ridiculous

Let's go, we need our own ASI.

@ceobillionaire

Wouldn't it be better to instead upgrade our own intelligence, so we can join "the larger of intelligence" ourselves?
