Moninder, the delivery agent, tied a rope around his waist and jumped into a water-filled basement in a desperate bid to save the victim, Yuvraj. Recounting the harrowing night, Moninder said the accident occurred around midnight when Yuvraj’s car lost control in poor visibility, broke the wall of a deep drain and fell into the basement. He, however, heard cries of the victim's help. “For nearly one hour and forty-five minutes, the boy kept pleading, ‘Brother, save me somehow,’” Moninder said. He alleged that the police, fire brigade and SDRF personnel present at the spot refused to enter the water, citing extreme cold and the presence of iron rods inside. Moninder said he reached the scene around 1:45 am, by which time Yuvraj had drowned barely ten minutes earlier. “I saw SDRF personnel sitting on a ladder and told them to rescue the man. They said they wouldn't do. I asked them to come out and told them I would go instead,” he said. Moninder said he removed his clothes, tied a rope around his waist and swam nearly 50 metres inside the water, searching for the victim and the car for over 30 minutes, but could not locate either.
