I'm an ex-high school history and government teacher” She explains most students cent read past a 4 letter word and students fail consistently at spelling their own name correctly, in high school…. “It's not just that the kids can't read. I mean, they can't. If it's longer than a 4 letter word, then go ahead and count that as a loss. They don't know how to capitalize. They don't know how to punctuate. They can't write more than a paragraph. Honestly, a paragraph is generous, but it's more than that. They have no reading comprehension. They have no critical thinking skills. They can't read an article or a paragraph and pull out critical information in order to help answer a question. And I know a lot of you are thinking like, "Well, you're the teacher. That's your job is to teach them how to do those things." And it's like, well, actually, I'm a high school history teacher. They are past the point of me teaching them how to read higher than an elementary school reading level. My job isn't to teach them how to read. That was the teachers before them. And I'm not blaming them either — it's a much bigger problem than me just not teaching them how to read. I had a student in high school who could not consistently spell their name correctly on the paper.
