This argument doesn't hold water. The hypothesis is that humanoid robots will be more versatile in open ended settings humans operate in. Using specialist robots for fixed tasks is not a counterexample.

The future of automated manufacturing will likely be one or both of the following approaches: 1. Newly developed workflows consisting of specialized robotic systems orchestrated together. 2. General purpose humanoid robots leveraging existing factories and human workflows.

Humanoids need a single, generalist control policy for all of their physical tasks, not a new one for every new chore or demo. A policy for walking can't dance. A policy for dancing can't support mowing the lawn. We need to scale up humanoid control for diverse behaviors, just like we did with language and video models. I’m sorry but every other form factor besides humanoids will be crushed 🦾🤖🦾 I keep hearing people starting specialized robotics companies, “like robots for laundry”. And the pitch is: “you don’t need a humanoid form factor to do laundry, it can be much simpler”. That’s true. But, humanoids can do everything and will become the default form factor and so will be mass manufactured and so will be extremely cheap compared to lower volume robots. Its so obvious, it will be humanoids doing laundry, not a specialized laundry robot 🤦‍♂️ The one main exception to that might be line work in a factory where you do just need the arms and you can mass manufacture them (a al Proception)
