Nothing beats this iconic sight — the Space Shuttle Endeavour hitching a ride atop a Boeing 747 over Los Angeles on September 21, 2012. Escorted by NASA F/A-18s and an F-15, the orbiter made its final flight to the California Science Center. What a farewell flyover!

That was a fun day. We went up on the roof of our office building and watched it go by. I loved Astronomy when growing up and used to get up early to watch Space Shuttle launches. Was a fitting end!

Leonardo DiCaprio bought that setup and added one of his yachts to the wing. That way if the next cLiMaTe ChAnGe conference is threatened by sea level rise he can just land on the water and the entire rig floats 😐

One of those flights flew over my building in Clear Lake, Texas, during that period. Ellington is just a few miles away, which I suspect is the connection. Still have the picture on my phone.

NASA had two 747s modified to ferry a space shuttle. One was a 100 series ex American Airlines. The other was a SR (short range) ex Japan Airlines.

I totally agree with you!!! It is beyond impressive. I am an avid airplane enthusiast myself and this is a once in a lifetime sight that I would have enjoyed watching in person.

I saw this pair taking off from Eglin AFB, Fl. I could only see the shuttle above the trees...looked like it was taking off on its own, crazy.

I saw it live when this video was taken when it made a Passover Skunk Works Plant 42 in Palmdale, CA. and today as of this post that carrier that you see in this video is sitting in my backyard in Palmdale.

I got to see this as they were on approach at Columbus AFB while working at Columbus-Lowndes County airport. Damnedest thing I have ever seen. It was like it was just hanging motionless it was moving so slow. What a day!

It’s always impressive watching the 747 fly with the shuttle on its back. One of the all time best civilian aircraft.
