Do me a favor: Grab a bat. Relax your hands and arms. Take an easy swing as if you’re hitting a ball. Notice how gravity naturally helps slot and turn the barrel? Maybe hitters don’t need to force the bat into position. Maybe they need to relax and let it flow.

I’ve watching hundreds, maybe even thousands of hours of elite MLB swings. This video work was done to determine their bat path. Their bat path determined their hard contact zone. As a catcher, my goal was to be above their bat path, or below their bat path. This was accomplished by utilizing velocity, movement, and obviously, location. The disruption of a hitter’s timing creates weak contact or swing and miss. Whenever I saw hitters that had a lengthy (3.5-4ft) of FLAT bat length in the zone, I knew that we would have to be very careful. These types of hitters had much room for error in their swing. They could be late, and line it oppo, or, they could be early on a hanger, and would pull it for damage. The more downward barrel tilt I saw, the more knob up I saw, and more barrel casting toward catcher I saw, it was always a lesser hitter I was watching. Perfect example here of a flat path. High heater, and flush contact. If you see barrel drop or a cast behind on this pitch, it’s a foul ball, swing and miss, or, a pop up on the infield.

This is one of the greatest feelings a hitter will ever experience… and most players never learn it. This drill has nothing to do with mechanics. It has everything to do with execution. The pitcher mixes fastballs and slow balls. Your only two rules: ⚾ Slow pitch or spin? Don’t roll it over. ⚾ Fastball? Don’t pull it. Now you’re forced to recognize speed instead of guessing. You’re training your eyes, your timing, and your approach—not just your swing. This is one of my favorite two-strike drills because it teaches hitters to trust what they see instead of committing too early. A great swing is important. Knowing when to use it is what separates hitters. Train with an expert, not an influencer.

A modified BHB to 3B in a sac situation. Many RHH feel more comfortable in this position than pivoting their hips & squaring up to the pitcher. 1) You can delay your turn & get out of the box faster giving you a chance to be safe at 1B if the third baseman is tentative. 2) It sets the angle of the bat more efficiently.

High reps don't build muscle better than low reps. They just make you tired faster, which feels like you worked harder, which your brain interprets as "this must be working." Meanwhile low rep training: - Generates more mechanical tension - Causes less systemic fatigue - Allows better recovery between sessions - Permits progressive overload more reliably But it doesn't make you feel destroyed. So we assume it's insufficient and add 12 more sets of cable work to "finish the muscle."

You can listen to current and former MLB hitters who recommend staying Short & Quick to the ball or guys like Cesare Angeloni better know as Chez Angeloni who teach the Long Barrel Dumping HLP swing. Now Chez actually played Minor League Baseball for 2 years as a relief pitcher but now he is teaching hitting and is one of the Certified HLP Instructors. Remember Richard Schenck, The Heretic JFD PPP LQC TTE. 🙂 decided to start certifying HLP instructors recently to make a few extra bucks. If you want your swing to look like this Chez is your man. Grip a club in your lead hand. Observe how twisting your forearm changes the angle of the face. This is largely what controls where your ball flies. Small differences in this angle lead to huge changes in shot direction. This precision is not being trained in the gym with “golf exercises”. Poor control of this face angle is what leads to a whole host of swing issues. More so than physical limitations. For example, it is far more likely you come over the top in an effort to stop the ball going right because your face is wide open and you’ve seen the ball go right the last 5000 times than it is you lack hip or shoulder mobility. It would be beneficial for me as a trainer to say otherwise, but I just don’t believe it to be true. Use the gym to work on your physical capabilities. Improve your mobility, strength, and power. These are the things you are losing as you age. Leave the swing mechanics for your practice and golf lessons. If you try to “fix your swing in the gym” you will likely do a poor job of training your swing and your body.
