I have watched OVERBOARD countless times. Every generation in my family loved it. It is eminently rewatchable. The great Garry Marshall had a phenomenal run of romantic comedies, and this remains my favorite. There is some suspension of disbelief required, as even as a high schooler, I saw this scene and thought, "That ain't right." No matter how awful she is! But the film is so good-natured, the chemistry and comic timing is perfection, and an early script by yet another great, Leslie Dixon, is superb. How it gets us rooting for them and screaming, "Oh no!" when her husband shows up is an absolute magic trick. It is because I loved movies like this just so much that I never wanted to focus on one genre. Kurt Russell made USED CARS and ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK back-to-back, so I wasn't surprised by his range at the time. But as I get older, I am more and more amazed by it. What a gift he and Goldie Hawn are in this film. I love this movie.

FREEBIE Behind the Scenes post! I reference Minecraft a lot on the comics because it's more well known, but 10yo's true love is a game called Terraria (basically Minecraft, but 2D and a LOT more stuff!) He's such a huge fan that his last TWO birthdays have been Terraria themed! With the internet being the cool place it is, after posting about my kids obsession, I became mutuals with the creator of Terraria, Redigit! HUGE Mom Cred earned!!! 😎 We got to chatting and at one point he said something along the lines of "So when's the Terraria comic coming?" He was joking, but now I wanted to make it happen! The problem was, Terraria is a bit more niche than Minecraft, so I needed a way to reference it while still appealing to everyone. I came up with the idea of Fran trying to keep up while Vincent switches through games. Terraria and Minecraft were obvious contenders, but I needed a #3. 8yo had been playing a lot of Pokémon, so that was my first idea, but Pokémon now looks very different to the classic look I wanted to draw. I was stumped on the 3rd game for a while until my kid brought up Animal Crossing! I'd drawn the family as Animal Crossing characters back in 2020 so it would be great to have an excuse to use them in a comic! I got to work on the comic by tracing real game characters and tweaking them to make them my own. I redid the Animal Crossing ones, making them closer to real cat characters in the game, but after looking back at my 2020 reedition, I decided to go with that one instead because it was more fun! When it came time to draw the Terraria characters, I showed 10yo the comic and asked if he could help me by designing some in-game characters I could trace. He was OUTRAGED! Not at the request, but at the fact Vincent goes back to Minecraft at the end instead of his beloved Terraria! I explained that the Minecraft movie was coming out, so it would be good for the comic to start with Minecraft Fran, but he wasn't having any of it and refused to help me until I changed it. Well what choice did I have?! I changed it! 😅 I didn't actually end up using the in-game characters he made (turned out easier to adapt models I found online) but I gleefully took his clever idea of doing game chat boxes instead of speech bubbles! If you're interested in bespoke tailoring and based in or around New York City, Hamin Kim, founder and cutter behind Hameen, is holding a trunk show this week in Manhattan. Earlier this morning, someone asked why wealthy people don't just go to a good tailor and buy a good suit. The answer is simple: the best tailoring nowadays is not always done by famous companies. And, in any case, most people are only familiar with ready-to-wear luxury names like Tom Ford and Cucinelli, not tailoring names. I wrote about Hamin's work last year in the context of how to spot good tailoring. Her work is bespoke and benchmade, which means she drafts the pattern from scratch using the client's measurements, then adjusts the garment through a series of three fittings. Aside from the long seams, which are always traditionally done by machine, all the operations are done by hand. By making a garment this way, she can shape it to fit the customer's build and posture. In the photos below, you can see how the canonical sleeve falls without a ripple, even when the person's arm is curved. The jacket button can be easily fastened with one hand because nothing pulls, and yet, the jacket has a ton of shaping. The trousers on the second slide could be cleaned up a bit, as the back is slightly collapsing, but the photo was taken during a fitting. The pattern is otherwise cut very well for a first draft. In the last twenty years or so, South Korea has emerged as one of the most interesting and vibrant places not only for fashion in general but also for bespoke tailoring in particular. The region has always had strong tailors, but this new crop of craftspeople — including Hamin — combines top-level bespoke work with good styling. Hamin's house style is broadly soft and minimally structured, yet with a lot of shape provided by the minimal use of canvas and strong ironwork. The result is a soft, natural shoulder line, a slightly full chest, straight lapels, and modest quarters. The silhouette would be good for people who like the idea of tailoring, but want something softer and more relaxed for semi-casual environments. GEN-Z OF KASHMIRI MUSLIMS & PAKISTAN'S MISERABLE LOSS AGAINST INDIA IN T-20 WORLD CUP: Social media of India's Kashmir Valley is full of comic short videos & reels, wherein Gen-Z of Kashmiri Muslims, who have come of age after 2019 are mocking Pakistani cricket team for their consistent miserable and pathetic performance against India in international cricket cups. NOT ONLY THIS, but most importantly they are expressing their open love and support for Indian cricket team and Indian cricket players. The attached video is that of a very popular Kashmiri Muslim Vlogger, who goes by the name "the Madhan". The video is in Koshur (Kashmiri) language, wherein he is mocking Pakistani cricket team on its loss against India in T-20 WORLD CUP qualifying match held a few days back in R. Premadasa stadium in Colombo, Sri Lanka. He even spits on the Pakistani cricket team and curses it throughout the comic video. But, most importantly, he mentions in Koshur language in this video that, we (Kashmiri Muslims) shouldn't care about the Pakistani team as we have our beloved Indian cricket team. It is important to add that GEN Z of Kashmiri Muslims, who have grown up in post 2019 Kashmir by and large do not think like their elder brothers & sisters (Burhan Wani generation) or their father & grand father’s generation of Kashmiri Muslims ( Kashmirs aged 50 and above). My father’s and grandfather’s generation of Kashmiris had created a self styled utopian image of Pakistan as a "pure Islamic" country full of affluence, where streets were made of gold and rivers of honey were flowing. My father's and grandfather’s generation dehumanized India as a "lowly" country of Hindu infidels. A lot of them still carry this extreme Hinduphobic mindset. This mindset brainwashed an entire generation of Kashmiri Muslims in supporting Pakistan in cricket matches, not out of sportsman spirit but for shared religious affiliation and hatred for Hindu community. ALL OF THAT CAREFULLY CRAFTED NARRATIVE HAS COLLAPSED IN POST 2019 KASHMIR. I spent 20 years architecting AAA game engines, going back to the PlayStation 1. I wrote all of that by hand. This one I did not. It is a stylized real time digital twin of the SF Bay Area, built from scratch in C++ and Vulkan. The geometry is real, the look is not. It is meant to read as a painted model of the Bay rather than a photo of it, because a photoreal copy of a place you can already see from a satellite is not worth building. The world is an 80 km square, about 6,400 km², and all of it is built from open data. USGS 3DEP 1 m lidar for the terrain. NOAA CoNED for the bay floor. USGS NHD for water. ESA WorldCover for land cover. OpenStreetMap for footprints and roads. That comes to 13 GB of streamed tiles, and 9.8 GB of it is terrain. Past the edge there is a 420 km coarse ring on Copernicus GLO-30, so the horizon does not end at a flat edge. Distant ridgelines bend down below it. There are 424,787 real building footprints in there, extruded procedurally, with heights off OSM tags and a plausibility gate that drops anything whose tagged height will not fit its own footprint. Across the whole 80 km box it rejects exactly 8 buildings, four of them towers carrying a bad height tag that used to extrude as needles over a derelict pier at Hunters Point. On top sit 41 landmarks at their real coordinates, authored by Fable as parametric Blender scripts rather than sculpted: Golden Gate, Transamerica, Coit, Sutro, Salesforce, the Ferry Building. Each one switches off the generated building underneath it. The simulation is the actual point. A 24 hour recording of real feeds plays back on a clock inside the app, at 1x up to 2000x. Caltrans PeMS for highway flow, 511 for Caltrain, OpenSky for flights, AIS for boats, METAR at SFO, OAK and SJC, and HRRR for weather. 165,356 samples across those 8 feeds. Cars spawn at the volume PeMS measured on that segment. Trains run the delays 511 reported. Planes fly the tracks OpenSky recorded. It is replay, not a live stream. Live polling is next and feeds the same clock, so it is a source swap rather than a rewrite. There is also a globe. You pick the Bay from orbit, fly down to the surface, and back out again. Reversed Z depth, HDR with a filmic tonemap, dual filter bloom, a time of day grade, and a volumetric marine layer for Karl the fog. AI agents write the issues, set the constraints, make the art direction calls, and review and validate every line of the roughly 235,000 lines of C++, GLSL, Python and PowerShell. What I built is the orchestration that holds it together, and the judgement on top of it: what to build, what to cut, and when to accept the result. The language choice is doing real work here. The hard part of AI written software is not producing the code. It is proving the code is right. C++ and Vulkan are unusually good at that, because nothing is hidden: every resource, every frame, every buffer you can read back. 28 golden image scenes compared by SSIM. An MCP server that drives the running app, so an agent can move the camera, set a sky preset, take a screenshot, and read the streaming counters back out. It validates against a live process instead of against its own diff. And a reviewer agent whose only job is to work out what the issue asked for before it reads the summary the PR wrote about itself. So I think C++ and Vulkan stay the heavy duty layer through the AI era. Not in spite of being low level. Because being performant, deterministic and checkable is exactly what an agent loop needs to push against. A managed engine hides the state that verification depends on. My 3 day Tuscany trip has come to an end and here are my thoughts: - you can still do Florence cheap. Our hotel was €45 a night in August. Nothing special but slept like a baby - Florence remains one of the most beautiful places on earth. Clean, doesn’t smell. Best way to avoid the crowds is stay away from the busy spots in the morning and go out in the evenings. Museums are closed, tourists are tired and back at their hotels - super hot and humid. August is certainly not the best time to visit - driving is easy. Rented an AT Citroen C3, €72.94 total. Roads aren’t the best (comparing to Spain) so be careful, but they’re empty. Probably the locals are all by the water - best Florentine steak I had was at Regina Bistecca. Massive t-bone Chianina at 9:45pm as they had not free table earlier. €115 for the steak, sides and water, worth every cent - Grosseto hotel was €110 p/n, 4 star but had a shitty AC so I slept with the window open and got destroyed by mosquitoes. Very little sleep that night - Siena: an absolute must visit and my favourite place in Tuscany. Do the Palio if you can - Grosseto: only spent the night so can’t say much. Compared to the rest of the region I thought it was mid - Arezzo: what a classy and gorgeous area. Saw a few farmhouses there, all neat and in good condition. Can still find good deals - Montone (and Umbria in general): if you love Tuscany and are looking to buy, take a look at this region. Still undiscovered and there’s real money going in. The road improved noticeably the second I crossed over from Tuscany, and Montone beautifully restored Overall 9/10, just go in May or September/October instead. Think that’s it.. oh the video is of a Tuscan vineyard in Arezzo.

Tom Holland on the moment 30 miles offshore that left him unable to speak for three hours Tom: "we went swimming with killer whales in Mexico I said the other day it was last year and it was one of the most humbling experiences of my life there's no proof of it there's no evidence because it was so off the cuff we weren't planning on doing it so most people I tell are like you definitely didn't do that" "we were in Mexico and we were on a boat and we just so happened to see this pod of orca Jack my security guard thought it'd be a good idea to jump in he jumped straight in flippers on goggles on and we were driving to keep up with the whales cuz they were kind of following our boat so by the time Jack had jumped in he was like 100 metres away and you could see him and the whales were like swimming around him so I'm starting to freak out cuz he's a good friend of mine" Jay: "and he's your security" Tom: "and he's my security I'm like Jack we got to get back to the hotel bro so I said to the guy like excuse me sir can you turn around and go and get my friend cuz we now can't see him anymore like he's gone we found him we got him back in the boat and he sort of said like lads you have to get in there it's unlike anything you've ever seen before" "my brother Harry's like googling whether or not it's safe to swim with them and it's sort of the general consensus online is don't go swimming with killer whales you can there's never been a recorded attack in the wild but they are wild animals big as a bus and also Jack's giving it like don't worry Tom I'll be there I'll look after you I'm like Jack what are you going to do bro like what's this this whale decides to eat me" Tom: "so anyway we put the flippers on put the goggles on we find the whales they're sort of interacting with the back of the boat they're clearly curious and I just was like I'm going to try it and see what happens I jumped in my brother jumped in Jack jumped in we kind of came together with 30 miles out of the coast so it's literally like dark blue water nothing below us" "and to my relief the whales had gone we couldn't see them so I'm sort of thinking oh well that's actually a bit of a touch at least I can say I jumped in and they have gone but then Jack said look down and we looked down and it came from beneath us" "what has been such an interesting experience for me was as soon as I saw the whale I wasn't scared anymore because I could just tell that it wasn't going to eat me I don't know how to explain it but you could just see from its body language" "I remember it so vividly it swam up to us it was maybe 10 metres below us and it was kind of motionlessly sort of just looking at us and then it kind of rolled on its back it did this weird thing where it kind of put its head like this and you could see its eye like we were having this crazy like moment and then it just swam off and it was gone" "and then for 3 hours afterwards I couldn't speak I had the biggest adrenaline dump I just basically was asleep but it was such an amazing experience to sort of meet the apex predator of the world and it kind of look at you and just swim away"

Sigh. I just had the credits roll in Pokemon Legends ZA, after 41 hours (i did a lot of side quests) You guys KNOW I am a HUGE Pokemon fan, always been. I grew up with the franchise and it was one of my biggest escapes growing up. I loved Scarlet and Violet, I LOVED Legend Arceus. Pokemon Legends ZA is.. so bad though. The story? Could have been a post main game storyline, barely any substance, barely anything of value. The main story is just the aftermath of X&Y. Some of the side characters stories is nice, other‘s is just annoying or forgettable. Character designs: Mixed opinion, some designs are peak (corbeaue), some are just blatantly awful and an eyesore (jacinthe). Map: ehhh, the map LOOKS small, doesn‘t feel small though. BUT if you take Legend Arceus in comparison, it‘s like 1/4th of the size if even? The parkour is done SO POORLY. It‘s boring and tedious. Looking back at Legend Arceus where you could literally climb mountains, swim and fly, the map traversal is just done poorly and boring. I get that they removed ridable pokemon because then the map would have instantly felt even smaller, but that‘s just an issue the pokemon/gamefreak created for themselves. They decided to have the game ONLY in the capital of Kalos. They also could have simply made the map bigger lol. Gameplay: PERSONALLY I don‘t see why people are praising the gameplay that much, maybe because it‘s finally something different? It‘s alright in normal 1v1 battles, easily becomes unreadable if there‘s multiple parties partaking (think mega battles before the final boss) The rogue mega battles LOOKED good, and they had a good idea, but WHY is the dash button on B, which is tied to the battle commands. Same for dodge being on the Y button. Bear with me, the rogue mega battles are done in a giant arena, and you have to DODGE and RUN a lot, while also ATTACKING the rogue mon. You you can only do ONE, attack, by holding down the left trigger and your A B X Y buttons transform into your moveset, or run and dodge. Just from a game design aspect, this is awful. And don‘t get me started on how buggy the gameplay is at times. Sometimes the trigger button does not even give me the attack moveset? (No its not my switch 2, tested on both switch 1 and 2 with both versions of the game) Right before the final part, my team is around lvl 65-70 and I more or less one shot everything. Now (and spoiler warning) multiple megas attack you, you fight alonsgide NPC trainers and the screen becomes so unreadable and my pokemon just get knocked out one after another? Idk if this is a skill issue, but the sudden spike of difficulty and the cluttered screen made that part really unfun. Final boss was just… awful. Two giant flowers appear, you have to knock them both out, but their damage is ridiculous, and they are super tanky. Then scene switch to Zygarde attacks Ange Floette, and repeat this for like 3 times. The rest of the fight also is just bad and boring. At least the cinematic looked pretty. The alpha pokemon that randomly appear are nice, but nothing of value was added by adding them. (Alphas were a HUGE story part in legend arceus, here it seems they are just throwing players a pity bone) The pokedex quest seems like it wants to be legend arceus so bad but it just misses the point. Legend arceus pokedex felt fun and enjoyable, legend za feels tedious and annoying. Shiny Hunting in this game is SO BORING. No sandwiches, no mass outbreaks, you just reload the area by fast traveling or resting at a bench. Can‘t talk about competitive. yet cuz I haven‘t gotten to it. Finally, this game is a 3,5/10 to me. If anything it made me wanna play Legend Arceus again

Our Battle Angel Alita cosplay will be on display from tomorrow this weekend at London Comic Con Winter at Olympia, November 16-17. I’ve set her all up to run on an ESP32 microprocessor powering an OLED display that shows the #smartdoll protocol boot sequence. The setup also includes pulsating lights that bring the cyber shell to life. For the past 10 years, whenever folks asked, “What’s so ‘smart’ about Smart Doll?” I’d share the story of how it all started as an April Fools’ joke that went viral. Back then, “Smart Doll” was imagined as a doll that could do your homework and even had built-in flamethrowers. The name stuck—almost as if it chose us—and it became an ongoing challenge to address, given the lack of any “smart” functionality. It’s a question I’ve been inspired to tackle in new ways ever since. ;-) But times have changed. Now, when people ask the same question, I simply reply, “What do you want them to do?” Until now, folks have used the Smart Doll platform to express creativity through our diverse collection of body shapes and skin tones. But Smart Doll is evolving—continuing to be a canvas for imagination while becoming a platform for innovation and limitless possibilities. With Cyber Shell Cortex, we’ve come full circle. Designed as a customizable shell for DIY enthusiasts, it allows folks to pair their Smart Doll with sensors, servo motors, and other modules, transforming them into an IoT-enabled companion capable of connecting to APIs like ChatGPT or IFTTT to control home appliances and more. For the first time, Smart Doll can truly live up to its name, limited only by the physical space inside and the creativity of those who dare to make it their own. There’s still work to do—like redesigning the spine to create more internal space for rechargeable batteries, modules, and servomotors. I’m also exploring motorized body panels that can open automatically—features that require retooling molds. While it’ll take some time before the release, I believe it will be worth the wait. Once the classic body is complete, my next goal is to Cortexify the Pear Body. More photos on the site
