Wrist Masterclass The wrists are arguably what matters most in whether your golf ball goes any where close to where you intend. After all, club face is the biggest influencer of start line and grip is the biggest influencer of club face. Learning a good grip, or at least a match up that will allow your particular grip to function, is essential to developing directional control. What we all want is predictability. We want to be able to aim to a given location, make a swinging motion, strike the ball well, and watch it travel somewhat near said location. Viktor Hovland made 8 birdies to close with a 5 under par 67 at the Masters. After the round, he went deep on the ball flight laws and the importance of matching up the club face to the swing path: “It's a good question. It's just tough to answer. First of all, that's why I like TrackMan and understanding the ball flight laws are very good to have because you can start a ball left, more left than you would like, but if it's curving back, who cares. That just means you're -- granted, if you're hitting it in the center your club path is just maybe creeping a bit more left, but if your face is in the right spot you're just hitting a bigger curve and then you can adjust that accordingly. “If you're starting the ball left and it's going left, is it a face issue, are you striking it off the heel and they're not coming back? There's a lot of minutiae involved with that. “If it's just a face-to-path issue or a club path direction, you can solve that pretty easily by playing a bigger cut or playing a bigger draw or moving it a bit more forward or back in the stance, simple stuff like that.” This is a great explanation that a lot of amateurs can learn from. Sergio Garcia has long been admired as one of the premier ball strikers in the game. I recently watched a video where he demonstrated how he uses his right hand through the impact zone—allowing the club to rotate naturally while maintaining extension in the wrist. It wasn’t a flip. It wasn’t a roll. It was controlled rotation with structure. So I gave it a try. I have to admit—I really liked the feel. The strike felt compressed. The club released without manipulation. And the ball came off the face with that heavy, penetrating flight we’re all chasing. Sometimes a small refinement in how the trail hand works through impact can change everything. You might want to experiment with it yourself. Rory McIlroy says the way he beat his first-tee nerves was to picture the ball in the trees and walk the worst case all the way to its end. "I say this all the time. It's counterintuitive to a lot of people to do this, but I do. If you're trying to overcome anxiety or nerves or on performance, I do try to think about, well, what's the worst that could happen?" "I'm not gonna die on the golf course, thankfully." "I used to have, like, first tee nerves, like, big time. I would struggle on the first tee. And so I would say to myself, well, what's the worst that could happen?" "So if you hit it in the trees, okay, then what do you do? You go up there and you figure it out, you know, you're skillful enough to hit a punch shot out of the trees and, you know, get it up to the green and get it up and down and make a par and move on." "For whatever reason, imagining, like, the worst-case scenario, give me a level of comfort, because I felt like any worst-case scenario that I could bring up in my head, I'll be able to deal with." "Especially on the first tee for me... if you get nervous on the golf course, you get tight... it gives me a sense of freedom. And like, if I can swing free, that's when I play my best golf." "So whatever thought process I need to get into to get there, whether that's imagining the worst-case scenario." "I think I'm not standing behind a tee shot and visualizing myself hit a bad shot. Like, I'm visualizing myself hitting it where I want to. But I think just even before I get to that point, thinking, well, what's the worst that can happen?" When on the course, if you suffer from one of these unfortunate shots, there are some “on the fly” strategies you can bring in, to prevent them from happening again. This video dives into a very easy practice swing that will give you the exact feel you need to have to avoid the heel of the club. In addition to this swing feel, have the thought to strike it on the toe of the club is also advisable. This will get you back to the sweet spot, where you want to be!
