People have forgotten about circuses and sideshows that were quite an industry during the depression era. Contortionists like these gals were a thing, along with freakishly tall, small and fat people. Anything people would spend a penny or nickel to see.

This was easier to do in old movies because back then most performers were contractually obligated to work for only one studio, but that meant that the studio would eat the cost of having their staff surgeon remove a couple of bones.
