I have submitted a bill to parliament for the UK to formally recognise the state of Palestine, this would be a significant step in supporting the rights of the Palestinian people. The time for Palestine and Palestinians is now. As Israel has done everything in its capacity to destroy any chance of Palestinian statehood – through settlement, land theft, and now the wholesale decimation of Gaza – British recognition will serve to reinforce the Palestinian people’s inalienable right to self-determination, which cannot be vetoed by Israel. This would further ensure a path to peace for everyone in the region and the world, and would not come at the expense of any community. In May countries across the world were joined by Spain, Ireland and Norway to officially recognise a Palestinian state. There are 146 of the 193 members of the United Nations that recognise Palestine as a state, the UK must align with these nations to support peace and justice in the region. The bill will be debated on 29 November and has cross party support and has been co-sponsored by: Siân Berry MP, Ian Byrne MP, Jeremy Corbyn MP, Stephen Gethins MP, Adnan Hussain MP, Kim Johnson MP, Ayoub Khan MP, Iqbal Mohamed MP, Brendan O’Hara MP and Liz Saville-Roberts MP. We hear MPs across the chamber object — “No!” — but she maintains, “Yes they do.” If we can't even agree on the facts of a statement that says "the College has concluded that it cannot support the Bill in its current form" - how are we meant to have an honest debate? This is not Parliament at its best.

Netanyahu expands scope of planned Gaza takeover, says Israel has 'no choice but to finish the job' | Anders Hagstrom, Fox News Israeli PM says operations will include Gaza City, central camps and Muwasi with goal to 'complete defeat of Hamas' Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says his security cabinet's plan to take over Gaza is more expansive than previously announced, arguing on Monday that Israel "has no choice but to finish the job and complete the defeat of Hamas." Netanyahu's office originally announced the takeover on Friday, but he now says the operations will include not only Gaza City but also in the "central camps" and Muwasi. The latter areas are home to well over 500,000 people. The Israeli prime minister says he has spoken with President Donald Trump about the plan and says he thanked him for America's "steadfast support." "Our goal is not to occupy Gaza, our goal is to free Gaza," Netanyahu said Monday. His office says the goals behind the takeover are to fully root out Hamas everywhere in Gaza before stabilizing the region and eventually handing leadership off to friendly Arab forces opposed to Hamas. The Security Cabinet's Friday announcement said it adopted, by vote, five principles for concluding the war which include: the disarming of Hamas, the return of all hostages – living and deceased – the demilitarization of the Gaza Strip, Israeli security control in the Gaza Strip, and the establishment of an alternative civil administration that is neither Hamas nor the Palestinian Authority. The plan gives the green light to Defense Minister Israel Katz to call up over 400,000 military reservists to carry out the operation until November 30. News of the operation comes as many of Israel's longtime allies have announced plans to recognize a Palestinian state. France announced such willingness earlier this year, while the United Kingdom and Canada followed over the past two weeks. Australia was the latest country to do so on Sunday. "Australia will recognize the right of the Palestinian people to a state of their own, predicated on the commitments Australia has received from the Palestinian Authority," Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said, referring to the governing entity of the Palestinian areas of the West Bank. Those commitments, he said, included the demilitarization of Gaza and the holding of elections – with no role for Hamas in a Palestinian government. Australia has designated Hamas a terrorist entity and Albanese repeated Monday his government's calls for the group to return Israeli hostages held since the Oct. 7, 2023 massacre. I told Andrew Marr of the LBC that the U.K. Foreign Secretary’s announcement in the parliament today was strong in its description of the egregious, extreme, and monstrous policies of this Israeli government but still unclear on how it will end Israel’s genocide in Gaza and colonisation of the West Bank. The UK must suspend all trade, military and intelligence support for Israel. There must be full accountability for war criminals and an immediate recognition of the state of Palestine. At this point, strong words and the suspension of talks is not enough to save lives. Link to full interview

Should ex Prime Minister Dame Jenny Shipley be charged with incitement? It has been sad to see the governing National party sidle up to the Marxist radicals of the Maori party this week in opposing ACT’s Treaty Principles Bill. Ms Shipley took this to new levels yesterday. In a discussion on Radio NZ, she opined that Maori would be justified in launching a civil war if the coalition govt proceeded with the bill. Even saying she would join it if they did. Jenny Shipley is an ex National party leader who was PM for two short years 1997-1999. Incongruously she says she does not wish to inflame the situation around the Treaty Principles Bill, but then goes on to mischaracterise it in a way that will do exactly that. The Treaty Principles Bill does not seek to re-write or change in any way the wording of the original 1840 Treaty document. Its purpose is to clarify the so called “principles of the Treaty of Waitangi” as first mentioned in legislation in 1975. IMHO Shipley was a disaster as Nats leader and as PM. Thankfully, her time has passed. Like her successor as PM Helen Clark, she needs to keep her unwanted opinions to herself and let our currently elected representatives get on with the job. Green’s leader Chloe Swarbrick denies inciting violence. She claims the responsibility lies with “the three men in charge of the country”. Appearing on Herald Now with Ryan Bridge this morning, Chloe claimed she did not know the activist who publicised the Foreign Minister’s home address, and said she did not invite her to yesterday’s presser. During the interview, Ms Swarbrick presented herself sitting in a chair adorned with the keffiyeh. The scarf that has become the worldwide symbol of a group that advocates hate and violence and the total destruction of Israel. Members of Ms Swarbrick’s Green Party often wear keffiyeh’s into the NZ parliament’s debating chamber. They also wear them at every press conference or at any public appearance. They are also well known for chanting the Hamas war cry- “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free”. A war cry that has as its underlying meaning the total annihilation of the state of Israel. Ms Swarbrick’s protests are blame shifting deceit. Kudos to Mr Bridges for challenging her on this issue when most other legacy media are overwhelmingly sympathetic to Ms Swarbrick and her cause. As for the real world- if the Greens were in any way able to be part of it, Chloe Swarbrick would have resigned as party leader and MP yesterday.

The Green Party is committed to the abolition of the Westminster system of governance. Leader Chloe Swarbrick says it should be replaced by a Treaty centric system based upon "me he whakaputanga" which means Maori sovereignty. She also attacks capitalism as an unworkable system. Altrhough she doesn't state it specifically, its pretty clear Ms Swarbrick wants NZ to be a communist state in the fashion of South Africa. Anyone voting for this in preference to our current system of govt, especially if you're white and female, needs to see a shrink ASAP.
