🔌Today I created a virtual web-based null modem so now you can finally play Quake 1 (from 1996) in multiplayer in the browser with other people online! This week I was able to create a virtual printer that listens on the COM2 port to make a web-based printer work in Windows 3.11, like on you can actually print to, it was one of my ideas when I started but it was always too difficult to make, I had no idea where to start, but this week AI was able to do it! Today I woke up and thought "if we can listen to COM2 via JS, how about listen to COM1 from Quake 1?" then we could forward the COM1 data via Websockets and to another user to create a virtual null modem (A null modem was a cable you'd use to connect two computers to each other directly in the 90s, if you couldn't afford buying a network card you'd use this to network, but you could only play with one other computer not multiple) So I built it, it took about an hour and works! I wanted to get Quake 1 in DOS to work with multiplayer for 2 years but I could never get it to work, but now it did it This project is a good benchmark of how capable AI is becoming, figuring stuff out that humans would take months within an hour You can try it here, I don't know how it will match lots of people but let's see, you have to exit to DOS first (ALT-F4 or FN-Option-F4 on Mac), then type CD games, then CD quake, then quake, then ESC, then Multiplayer, then either Create New Game or Join Game, and use Direct Connect, keep settings same and you're in!

And it works! 😊 I've now been able to make all these DOS games work in their original DOS versions in multiplayer with my own local area network (LAN) emulator: - Quake 1 - Duke Nukem 3D - Doom 1 - Doom 2 If you go to and start a game, you get auto matched with another player if available, and a little LAN is created between you two over the internet and via my server (over Websockets) It works remarkably well if you think about all the steps involved

✨ 7 years after I set up a Quake III server, I have it running again, but now in the web browser, much easier 😊 👉 👈 Back in 2019 we'd play a fork of Quake III called OpenArena in a Bali villa with Daniel Lockyer Marc Köhlbrugge @dannypostmaa Lenny Dos Santos 🚀 Guilherme Rizzo Andrey Azimov Sean and other ppl But it broke after a new Mac update and they never really fixed it, it kinda sucked because it was actually the only game we could just load with friends online and play death match a bit and then continue your day Luckily Luka built Q3JS which successfully compiles ioquake3 to WebAssembly and now it works in the browser To make it extra simple, I've set up a Q3JS server and frontend for you to use at which loads you straight into the game A big problem is that most of the times, nobody's playing, so I've also added Web Notifications, which notifies you if enough human players join, so you can join a match. And I've added a daily match at 8 PM GMT every day which everyone also gets notified when it starts If you want more servers and maps etc, you can check out Luka's own HAPPY FRAGGING

I have revived Javi Lopez ⛩️'s 28 year old custom map he made and made a web-based Quake 2 with Fable on fast mode 🤓 You can now play it here: 👉 👈 It took a bit of hacking because the textures didn't load the first time, so I repacked some PAK files and now it works! AI is so good at reviving old stuff from your backups, I was always waiting for some backup app to come to finally be able to browse all my old files and figure stuff out from it, and now you can with AI

🚗 Tried to make my first voxel-based game ever with bolt.new It's my first time really using Bolt, you get your regular prompt window on the left side, but any updates to your project are immediately visible on the right side as a browser I think it's much easier for non-tech people because you don't need to switch to your browser to test, and because you skip the whole deployment step, you just click Publish or say publish and it's up as a site My game here is inspired by Teardown, that game that's built up by voxel blocks where you can destroy everything, it's somehow so satisfying to destroy every wall and object But I wanted to do it as a race game, but then I thought why not make it like demolition derby where the goal is to crash into each other? And parts of your car fly off etc. So 🚗 Voxel Derby was born It took a bit to get everything right and you still have to direct it to get what you want, like the engine sound was quite basic and then I told it "okay add gears" and then suddenly it sounded realistic, that kind of stuff But it actually built a performant voxel-based game pretty easily, I'm impressed Tomorrow I'll try add multiplayer just with Bolt, no idea if it can do, it'd have to spin up some server for that but we'll see if it works 😊

MEGA update: 🥳 IT WORKS: we now have a working dial up internet connection on a virtual Windows 3.11 computer running inside a browser over a virtual modem that talks via Websockets to a PPP daemon! So you can open open the computer, browse the web and even open the page you're on itself again at or chat inside mIRC chat app on or browse gopher:// or whatever you like to do Probably the nerdiest challenge I've ever taken on for the totally arbitrary reason that it seemed completely impossible to do this but we did it (now need to test it more so that it works with 250 parallel users at same time, but the prototype works now, so if you ask why it's not live yet) James Baicoianu, probably one of 2 people in the world who knows how to do this, helped fix my setup and created a virtual dial up internet provider for me that we can dial in to Somehow my mouse doesn't work yet, so I had to do it with the keyboard but here we run Winsock to dial up on a virtual modem that runs then emulates a virtual dial up ISP over Websockets [Next todo] - Fix the mouse - Make the 90mb emulated file smaller - See if it doesn't die with 10 or 50 parallel users - Speed up the Em-Dosbox emulator a bit so it's more usable

If you're an entrepreneur and you're taking a lot of risk, you wanna get five million bucks in T-bills sitting in account. That is what I call the f*** you money that gives you the power to do whatever you want. That protects you and you have to have the discipline to park that. You get to look at it every day and every month you get a big check off it, and leave it alone. Not everyone can get there, but if you get your first pass, take five and just put it into T-bills. Really boringo.

Yeah, right. Anybody in my shoes with nine minutes left? Okay. A minute? All right. Nine? Yeah, I'm going for it. You can't be mad at that. If you are mad, I don't care because a lot of people, they're upset because if they did play, they never had a chance to get that close to chasing greatness. So here is new local privilege escalation zero-day I discovered, not patched yet too :). In simple terms, if you have a service like RDP that exposes an RPC server, there many system services running as SYSTEM connect to it as RPC clients. If that service is turned off (RDP is off by default), it seems that any other process in Windows can expose the same RPC server using the same endpoint. Now all the RPC calls from that SYSTEM processes will come to this fake server and If the process that deployed the server has SeImpersonatePrivilege, it can escalate to SYSTEM by impersonate the RPC client. In the white paper below, I describe five exploit paths you can abuse. However it's architecture problem and maybe there are more. It's Not A Potato

Finally! I added multiplayer to my browser-based WebGL card game, Summoners. Multiplayer is a really common request. You pick your deck and then send the URL to a friend. They can join even if they don't have an account. It's free to play and live on the site now. I built the multiplayer system using websockets and Fly.io servers. It's working great so far but drop any bugs in the Summoners.io discord. 🙏 🪄 Happy gaming ⚔️

I see this comment now and then but pro or not, the argument is that the game CAN be played like that, due to a learning curve that recent games got rid of. You can pull it off if you want to and once you get the hang of it, this is what your gameplay can effortlessly look like.
