I think it's common misconception, cheap low quality was also made in the past but only the strongest stood through time... therefore that's all we have and compare.

Made in USA vs China. US Steel baby. American companies used to stand behind a Lifetime Guarantee. We'll get there again someday. Meanwhile, some US companies never left that table. Zippo for example.

Doesn’t it stand to reason that the one that is still around after 65 years might just be the best one made in that era and that there were plenty of weak ones that aren’t around to test?

That old hammer has been worked... You can see that it has already been compressed/hardened over the years.

You're comparing high quality old tools to low quality new tools. They had cheap tools back then as well, but only the good ones survived.

The old hammer was cold worked for decades. Steel gets harder with use.

Things were made better in the past. My mom still has a GE hand mixer that she received as a wedding gift in 1957. I just used it last night baking a Sherry cake.

That old hammer has been work hardened, it’s much harder now after years of use than the unused hammer.

Why did they compare tempered steel and a heroin brick?

Old was overbuilt. They had no idea how much was needed so everything was overdone so they wouldn't have to test

I don't know how often you smash something with a hammer using 80 tons of force. But I guess, not too often, which is why it doesn't have to withstand 80+ tons of pressure, I think. 🤔

You actually don't want a "hard" sledge hammer. Increasing the hardness will increase brittleness.

When one starts to understand metallurgy, one understands this has nothing to do with old vs new and everything to do with alloy and heat treat.

The way the new one crumbles, it looks like a casting. You can see the inclusions before it's compressed.

My grandfather was born in 1880. He was a carpenter. My brother inherited his massively huge toolbox. He used those tools to build a house.
