‼️ The irony of Telegraph journalist wondering why the UK is hit harder by global shocks. Their beloved Brexit added friction, removed resilience, blowing 8% black hole in public finances. But the deeper problem runs back to their idol Thatcher and privatisation agenda which decimated industry and sold off our oil/gas and utilities to global markets, and weakened domestic food production. Brexit exposed these previous disastrous decisions and now we hurt more. Sovereignty is in fact about having control of energy and food and Europe provided shelter. Now we are out of Europe we are totally exposed.

🔥 Brexit caused British energy prices to soar. We left the EU’s integrated energy market, added friction, and reduced cooperation on supply and pricing. So now we’re more exposed and drilling more doesn’t fix that 👉 only rejoining the EU does! We already produce a large share of our gas and still pay global prices.

The Tories’ ludicrous position on energy was exposed on #bbcqt. Harriet Baldwin argued drilling more oil and gas in the North Sea improves “energy security”. Fiona Bruce challenged her: “If North Sea gas is sold on the international market, how does drilling more make the UK more secure?” Baldwin had no answer … bc there isn’t one. The Tories sold off our oil and gas instead of managing it like Norway. Then Brexit took the UK out of the European Union Internal Energy Market and doubled down on gas priced on global markets. Now they claim drilling more gas we don’t control will make us secure. ❌ It won’t.

Clare O’Neil has to be kidding. Australia’s renewable obsession leaves us exposed to global shocks despite our world-class coal & uranium reserves. Even CSIRO’s own GenCost data now shows black coal is the cheapest form of electricity right now. We still rely on coal and gas for most reliable power. Renewables need massive storage & backups. Time to use our domestic abundance for secure, affordable energy, not self-sabotage.

I just told BBC News (UK): Energy crises are fundamentally demand problems, not supply problems. 80% of our energy is fossil fuels, much of it imported, leaving us exposed to price spikes. The only long-term fix: electrify the economy with clean power.

The price of fossil gas sets the price of all electricity in our country - even that from the wind and sun, it’s an absurd market mechanism that enriches a few at the expense of the rest. We have to bring bills down. Breaking the ‘gas link’ is an obvious thing to do - so why aren’t we?
