@kent73231 According to the book “1491”, 90 to 95% of Indigenous Peoples in the New World died in the centuries after Columbus’s arrival. It wasn’t until the 20th century that their populations rebounded to pre-Columbian levels. I celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day.

The proclamation honors the Italian explorer Christopher Columbus and officially recognizes the second Monday in October as Columbus Day, which has been a federal holiday since 1937. Recently, states across the country have commemorated the day as Indigenous Peoples Day to acknowledge the genocide and land theft of native people that was committed after Columbus came to the New World. In 2021, then-President Joe Biden signed a proclamation that also recognized the day as Indigenous Peoples' Day. Trump's proclamation comes as his administration continues to target what they see as "woke" polices and institutions.
