This is what we do after it. When the aircraft is sitting and volcanic ash is in the air, first job is cover the engines. Those red bags are inlet covers. Ash looks like dust. Inside a hot engine it melts, then turns into glass on the turbine. Covers keep it out while the jet is on the ground.

Pilots start the APU. We power the jet so that start doesn’t turn into a defect. Not the same job. Crew flow is quick. Battery. Signs. Flick the APU. Gens on. Bleed. Go. Fine when the airplane is already awake and you’re chasing a slot. On a dark bird after a night stop? That’s how you get a weak battery, a door that never quite opened, and a FAULT light. I take my time because I have to put power on the aircraft before that APU can give us air. Start it clean, load it late, don’t poke it three times for fun. The tail remembers.

B787 right pedal test. Just a light heel and the aft wheels went to 20-25% EBA force. Then I put the whole foot on it, toe and heel together, and the right side jumped to 66%. Each of the eight main wheels has its own carbon brake and each brake has four electric actuators. That’s 32 of them on the airplane. No hydraulics at all. The page we use shows everything at once: how much you’re pressing, park brake status, tire pressures, brake temps, remaining life and the actual EBA force. It only uses the aft pair until you really stand on it, which is by design to save wear. Some pilots still prefer the feel of hydraulic brakes with their 3,000 to 5,000 psi. Others like the 787 electric setup. The good thing here is we get to see a lot of data on the brakes, as you can see from this page.
