I really don't get this attitude. Alberta is proposing a pipeline to the West Coast to export oil to overseas that will bring billions to Canada's economy and diversify our exports - both things that the Liberal government claims it wants to do but acting like it's not in national best interest and an Alberta thing. Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Tim Hodgson: "If Alberta wants to be a proponent for a pipeline, that's their right to do so. They need to meet the 5 criteria...when they will bring that project forward we will take a look where they are and evaluate it any other project. Tanker ban? It's hypothetical question." Why not be proactive and be part of the solution? They know that their red tape is what stands in the way and will not bring any confidence to the private sector.

And the abundance ethos harkens back to the old ideas that existed from the turn of the twentieth century through the 1960s — that we should be building up government power so that government is capable of taking on these corporations. That we have people in government who can make discretionary decisions about where we're going to build transmission lines, how we're going to improve transit, where we're going to build housing, how we're going to regulate this and that. We want bureaucracies to be able to move speedily and make decisions in the public interest. It's the reforms we've seen since the 60s and 70s that have slowed government down so they cannot be responsive to the corporate challenge. The idea that we should abandon abundance in the name of attacking corporations misses the point that government should be a competent institution that can accurately — and thoroughly — review and challenge corporations when they're doing wrong.

Today there was a presser announcing the submission to the "major projects office" of the pipeline expansion from Alberta to the coast of BC. In this clip a reporter asks why there is a need to have government subsidization of it. Premier replies that it's because there is so much industry uncertainty involving pipeline development (due to so many costly cancelled approvals in the past) that having government subsidies give assurance to the contractors that the project won't be cancelled. She also noted that the project would be a lucrative investment for taxpayers. Carney added that the "de-risked" TMX is added a fair amount of money to social programs for all Canadians. He talks about other similar "investments" into nuclear projects and data centres and that the government's role is "catalytic" in all of that. He says it's the federal government's role to create the conditions unlock the ability of private companies to invest and build. He said this is for the benefit of all Albertans and Canadians. _____ Of course this is all doublespeak. What we are seeing is a transition to having even more state owned control of our valuable resources. There will be a continued massive beaurocratic bloat coupled with patronage appointments. All the feds have to do is stop with the regulatory nonsense and the rest would fall into place. The march to having increased control of this country and it's citizens continues. I'm not a fan of this UCP oil pipeline endeavor that will line up connected pockets and I'm sure as heck not in favour of this: Danielle Smith: "We have a facility called the Alberta Indigenous Opportunities Corporation where we have the ability to underwrite up to $3B in loan guarantees so that Indigenous Nations are able to take equity stake." Taxpayers shouldn't be on the hook nor rewarding a selected group of people nor should we be forcing oil&gas companies (any companies) to arbitrary partnerships. This is essentially bribing. Close that department down. The fact that this is even a stipulation to the project speaks to why we just can't get anything done in Canada.

This is how hidden carbon taxes still exist in Canada. And are passed along to the consumer. Producers are forced to comply with new government regulations that kick in, and if they can't, they must use carbon credits that they have to purchase. All of these things are costs paid by the producer, which are ultimately passed downstream to the consumer. This is Canada's new carbon tax that we will be paying at the pump.
