One of F1's darkest weekends would continue on 1 May 1994. This time taking the life of Brazilian driver, Ayrton Senna. #Senna30

The previous day, Austrian driver Roland Ratzenberger had died when his car crashed during qualification for the race.

Several other collisions took place that weekend, including a serious one involving Rubens Barrichello.

Ahead of the race, Senna stowed an Austrian flag in his car. It is thought that Senna planned to honor Ratzenberger, the Austrian driver, by waving the flag if he emerged victorious.

During lap 6, Senna set a quick pace, followed by Schumacher. At Tamburello, Schumacher noticed Senna's car jiggling on bumps. On lap 7, Senna's car left the racing line at Tamburello, hit a barrier after braking hard from 309 km/h to 211 km/h.

Ratzenberger and Senna's crashes were the first fatal accidents to occur during a Formula One race meeting since that of Riccardo Paletti at the 1982 Canadian Grand Prix, and were also the last until that of Jules Bianchi at the 2014 Japanese Grand Prix.

During preseason testing, Senna had have these ominous words of the Williams FW16. The problems continued as the season commenced. Senna had his worst ever start to a Formula One season, failing to finish or score points in the first two races, despite having taken pole in both.

Brazil united in grief for Ayrton Senna. Millions flooded the streets for one last goodbye. Brazil stood still for three days of national mourning. #Senna30
