One of my first projects Linear was to make the launch video for Insights. It was a dream brief – everything Karri Saarinen asked for was exactly the kind of style that resonates with me. It was a challenge to try and live up to that. Here are some... show more

My initial assumption was I'd shoot the interface in-camera. Taking inspiration from @gmunk's technique over the years, I tried a few versions. Here is the interface shot on the XDR monitor with an 100mm macro lens.

I briefly explored filming the interface on an old monitor. While I loved seeing the individual pixels, I had an impossible time color grading it and decided to go back to filming the XDR.

Moving my office around every time I needed to film was getting super annoying. As an alernative, I ran some tests simulating the camera moves in After Effects. I was very happy with how this direction felt.

Despite that, I took a brief detour and explored two dead-end directions involving more animation and text effects 😅

These were undercooked, and I think maybe there could have been something there with like 100 more hours of animation.

Ultimately I decided to go back to the isometric interface and simulated camera look. It afforded me so much control and also looked the best. I could replicate the interface over and over to allow me plenty of room for smooth camera motion and no emptiness.

One of my favorite details is the ever-so-slight RGB seperation applied to each layer. It helps enhance the camera simulation. And just looks awesome so why not.

It was a fun project. Almost impossible to screw up given how amazing the interfaces were that @Griveau had designed in the first place. The beauty of data, indeed!

@linear @karrisaarinen you're the big inspo Cornell 😘 mad respect.

@linear @karrisaarinen Such a genius execution!! Loving all the public sharing of how things are done! Chef’s kiss level right there 🤩
