My question is: do we need a breakthrough in material science or will robots and 3d comtinuous printing of these alloys extend our limits with current metals

We need something of this nature that can build structures in space, and on the surface of the moon and Mars. Then we can start doing significant productive activity, beyond just pure science, in space.

It's not a very accurate process. They use a welding head to dispense the material. Plus the fine particulate metals in the air are extremely dangerous to employees in the building & office. Very expensive to protect people properly.
