One unsolved equation at Princeton made Jeff Bezos quit physics forever. He was crushing the honors track. A-pluses almost everywhere. Then one partial differential equation stopped him and his roommate cold after three hours of work. They went to the smartest guy in the class. He looked at it... for a few seconds and said “cosine.” Then wrote out three pages of algebra that proved it. He hadn’t done it in his head. He had mapped it onto a similar problem he solved years earlier. That was the moment Bezos saw the gap. Some people recognize the pattern instantly. Most of us grind and still miss it. I’ve thought about this a lot. Knowing when you’re not the one who can map the problem is its own kind of intelligence. The best decisions sometimes start with admitting the ceiling and walking toward a different door. For Bezos that clarity became an advantage.
