I pulled a control rod out of an active nuclear reactor. It was Matt Loszak's idea — he cofounded Aalo Atomics to build a nuclear reactor safe enough for your backyard, a bold idea... and one worthy of an experiment. We need an audit into the wasted billions spent by Labor and the Coalition on the Aboriginal industry and we need a Royal Commission into the abuse of children in these communities. Labor dismantled the Northern Territory intervention made under John Howard in response to the appalling reports of rampant child sexual abuse coming out of the communities. But the abuse never stopped. Child sexual abuse continues to traumatise another generation of young indigenous people in remote communities. These kids hit the streets every night – because they’re safer out there than at home – and getting into all sorts of trouble. They deserve support. They deserve a safe home and a safe community. They deserve nothing less than a Royal Commission into how this abuse has been allowed to continue. I’m very pleased the Coalition has adopted my call for a comprehensive audit into the aboriginal industry gravy train. I have been calling for this audit since I was first elected in 1996. Around one trillion dollars has been poured into indigenous programs since the awful Whitlam era. These are programs designed and delivered mostly by indigenous activists, advocates, and the many indigenous corporations, land councils and charities. And the gaps are not closing. It hasn’t been a total waste, and the audit could also identify those few programs which have genuinely delivered better outcomes. I would welcome that with all my heart, because it would help deliver on the third element of this motion – practical policy ideas that really improve the lives of Australians living in disadvantage.

We need an audit into the wasted billions spent by Labor and the Coalition on the Aboriginal industry and we need a Royal Commission into the abuse of children in these communities. Labor dismantled the Northern Territory intervention made under John Howard in response to the appalling reports of rampant child sexual abuse coming out of the communities. But the abuse never stopped. Child sexual abuse continues to traumatise another generation of young indigenous people in remote communities. These kids hit the streets every night – because they’re safer out there than at home – and getting into all sorts of trouble. They deserve support. They deserve a safe home and a safe community. They deserve nothing less than a Royal Commission into how this abuse has been allowed to continue. I’m very pleased the Coalition has adopted my call for a comprehensive audit into the aboriginal industry gravy train. I have been calling for this audit since I was first elected in 1996. Around one trillion dollars has been poured into indigenous programs since the awful Whitlam era. These are programs designed and delivered mostly by indigenous activists, advocates, and the many indigenous corporations, land councils and charities. And the gaps are not closing. It hasn’t been a total waste, and the audit could also identify those few programs which have genuinely delivered better outcomes. I would welcome that with all my heart, because it would help deliver on the third element of this motion – practical policy ideas that really improve the lives of Australians living in disadvantage.

Most of our major cities are living under a blanket of poisonous air. Millions of children are getting lung diseases, their future is being destroyed, and people are getting cancer. Older people are struggling to breathe. This is an interesting issue because I am certain that there would be full agreement between the government and us on this. This is not an ideological issue; everybody in the House agrees that air pollution—and the damage it is doing to our people—is something we should co-operate on. I think it is important that the government develops a plan to get rid of air pollution in our cities. We are more than happy to co-operate with the government to develop such a plan. On this issue, we can show the country that we can work together on something that is critical. This is a long tweet - but its worth a read - Reform UK’s Dr David Bull talking about family and whether parents should stay at home to look after their children: “You want to support marriage through the tax system and make it easier for parents to stay at home to look after their children - what's the reason behind that?” Dr David Bull: We believe that children do better in stable relationships across the board. And actually we need to encourage that. In marriage you think? Dr Bull: In marriage, and that marriage is an important bond, isn't it? Because I think what children desperately need is someone at home, and they need someone to be there and support them during that education. So we think that's a cornerstone, actually. And one of the things that I find really strange and very difficult to understand is the disconnect that children now have, because when you come home, you want to be able to offload what's been going on at school, and you need someone at home to be able to do that. And if we can incentivise that through tax breaks that has to be a good thing. Do you think if you're a child with two working parents, that's not a great upbringing for you? Dr Bull: No… Of course, it's incredibly difficult. And parents have to work because of the cost of living. But actually, the ideal would be to have a parent that is there available when children need them. You say in the manifesto that the majority of mothers would choose to stay at home more if they could. What's the research on that? Dr Bull: So we polled extensively, actually. But I think if you talk to any mother, of course, they want to spend time with their children. They want to see them grow and develop. My highlight of the week: helicopter-under water escape training 🌊🚁 After returning from space, astronauts typically land with their spacecraft in the ocean. We are retrieved by an incredible team of Flight Surgeons and Crew Support Officers, who pick us up by helicopter and bring us safely back to land. And as always, we also prepare for things that might go wrong there. Training to escape from a capsized helicopter is essential not only for astronauts, but for the entire crew involved. In the event of an emergency water landing, the team only has a few seconds to get out -helicopters are top-heavy, so they can overturn and sink quickly. To prepare us for every possible scenario, the instructors challenged us in all kinds of ways: tinted goggles that block visibility, climbing out through a different window than the one next to us, escaping without using our emergency air supply, and more. All of it designed to help us stay calm and focused - no matter what might happen in an emergency.
