I've been checking into UN Development Program (UNDP) that you mentioned as an organization that followed Ghislaine Maxwell's TerraMar Project on Twitter. UNDP holds 5 federal grants for $23.6 million, including one from USAID for $14.2 million for "Mobile Banking - UN." Digging deeper into the transactions on USAspending, it refers to the disbursements to UNDP as being part of the USAID annual contribution to the UNCDF for the "Better than Cash Alliance." Today, we announced our 2024-2026 Immigration Levels Plan: We are maintaining targets of 485,000 permanent residents for 2024 and completing the final step to reach 500,000 in 2025. For 2026, we will stabilize permanent resident levels at 500,000 allowing time for successful integration while continuing to augment Canada’s labour market. The government also plans to take action over the next year to recalibrate the number of temporary resident admissions to ensure this aspect of our immigration system also remains sustainable. 🚨 Here we go again! Greg Abbott sent 42 exhausted, traumatized migrants on a 24-hour bus ride from Texas to LA. This is not relief, it's a dangerous political stunt! I'm proud of our city's response. LA welcomed these individuals, offering them food, shelter, and legal aid. They were tired, but they were finally treated with the dignity they deserve. But let's talk about the REAL issue here. Since last year, Texas has bused more than 21,000 migrants to cities across the country. This isn't a solution; it's a cruel tactic to shirk responsibility and pass the problem to others. Instead of attacking and demonizing asylum seekers, we in California focus on working with local communities to support and humanely welcome people. That's the kind of leadership we need, not cheap political games. As your representative, I will always stand for openness, compassion, and readiness in the face of unexpected challenges. My Jamaican family, especially those in the parishes of Westmoreland, Hanover, Trelawny, St. James, and St. Elizabeth, we know you have been hardest hit by Hurricane Melissa, and we know that your needs are urgent. Many of you are anxious and still processing the trauma of an event few could have imagined. We want to assure you that we are working, every hour of every day, to reach you. The Jamaica Defence Force, the National Works Agency, the Jamaica Constabulary Force, and our Fire Brigade are on the ground, clearing blocked roads and re-establishing access to communities that remain cut off. We have welcomed a 300-member humanitarian team from El Salvador, trained in search and rescue, public order, disaster response, and health care. They have arrived with medical supplies and essential relief. We are also working closely with the United States to enhance air support, with helicopters now supplementing the JDF fleet to accelerate aid delivery. These are tangible examples of how we are mobilizing all available local and international partnerships to ensure every community receives assistance. Summary of Dr Thandi Dodo Sidzumo-Mazibuko interview (1986) 1. Any forms and levels of material aid from foreign donors must be limited to what African people themselves have requested. 2. Aid terms and conditions must comme from the people. Communities must determine their most pressing needs and only then can well meaning aid givers come to the party. 3. Most agencies are interested in getting quick results while overlooking the human element in development projects. When you work with human beings you cannot operate in technical and systematic cold fashion. 4. We must look into who creates hunger and who sustains that hunger, the national and International forces with a negative impact on different communities. 5. Assistance must be given on our own terms, we must determine that kind of help we need. 6. Before participating in a community development project, we must first understand that community's perceptions of its needs. 7. On the basis of the community's description of its needs we can use our communication and technical expertise only for the purposes of complementing existing capabilities. 8. We must be clear that development highlights a community's struggle to develop itself. Development is community participation in breaking away from all kinds of dependency, economically or otherwise to attain self reliance. The role of the expert is to increase capability of the focus group. 9. Education is divided between education for LIBERATION and education for DOMINATION. In the case of the latter, self proclaimed development experts like IMF are divorced from the realities of communities where thy they impose their aid programmes. The communities are always left poor ,disempowered and more prone to continued domination. 10. The role of tbe researcher is to provide social analysis, make people aware that when a certain area or community is underdeveloped it is not always because the community members are lazy. Due to historical colonization of Africa by Europe, the question of monocultures has been created such as in Senegal where people were forced to produce rubber while they were experiencing a problem of hunger. 11. There are national forces and international forces that impact lives. International forces like IMF and World Bank impose themselves on governments and enforce anti-development loan or aid conditions. Loans from IMF and World Bank must be rejected as they are not meant to support the livelihoods of our people especially the poorer classes. 12. Researchers have a duty to bring this information to communities so that they develop an understanding of the machinations of different forces with regards to development, how the world functions,and how that affects our situation. 13. Researchers must present data to communities, allow those communities to evaluate the data and give their input so that they don't become objects of research. That is the only effective way of mobilizing for the material and intellectual development of people. Anything else opposite to that will render the researcher an agent of imperialism. 14. The structural cause of hunger in Africa is land pressure which is a product of white colonizers taking all the productive arable land and pushing our people to the dry reserves. Colonizers did not come with civilization, even when you go to the most remote of areas where people have to access to modern sources of agriculture information, in their own rudimentary ways the people know about the differences in soil types and their suitability for certain kinds of crops. The view that Africans don't understand their land is an ugly lie. 15. The role of the researcher is to compliment existing knowledge and share information on organisations that control our lives such as IMF and World Bank. 16. There must be a balance between monetary inputs and communication inputs bearing in mind that in all development projects, our people must attain intellectual development too. 17. Today 4,000 kits of core relief items crossed and cleared from #Ethiopia into southeast #Sudan. It’s enough to improve the lives of 20,000 people, but the good news isn’t the number; it’s the route. We’ve been pushing for #humanitarian assistance to enter via as many border crossings as possible to max out the flow of lifesaving aid to people across this vast country. This is the first major aid shipment originating from Ethiopia into Sudan. Hopefully not the last; it was meant as a test case and to break new ground. To be frank, it took months to coordinate and build consensus with all relevant stakeholders, and to push through different and new procedures—but now that it’s established, much easier to re-run. Thanks to Governors in both Amhara (Ethiopia) and Gedaref (Sudan) for facilitating movements within and across their territories (not easy in current contexts on either side), for UN OCHA Ethiopia and our Ethiopia team for supporting clearances on the other side of the border, and the Humanitarian Aid Commission and Wali’s office in Gedaref for expediting clearances this side. To close the SDG financing gap, we need to undertake the following bold measures: Firstly, we need debt relief and restructuring that is faster, fairer and more comprehensive. Secondly, we need to mobilise affordable, accessible financing from a wide range of sources. Thirdly, we need to rechannel unused Special Drawing Rights to countries in need. Fourthly, we must scale up concessional finance through development banks. Lastly, we must reform global tax rules to curb illicit financial flows Beyond financial instruments, we need confidence that commitments will be honoured and that global rules will be shaped by all members, not just a few. Let us forge a new compact for financing sustainable development rooted in solidarity, equity and mutual accountability.
