#OnThisDay, 1968: #2001ASpaceOdyssey was released. The 'Stargate' sequence was achieved through the 'slit-scan' technique, pioneered by Visual Effects Supervisor Douglas Trumbull: exposing a frame of film while the camera tracks in towards an aperture shaped like a narrow slit.

After 2001, Douglas Trumbull swore he would, "never work for anyone else again, because Stanley was one hell of a taskmaster." Initially, I thought this meant he was swearing his allegiance to only work for Stanley, but he actually stopped working for anyone.

All of 2001: A Space Odyssey is a miracle; the impeccable subtle acting, the sound design, score choice and complementary cinematography, the cinematography itself, and the special effects that came out of nowhere (nothing before it remotely came close). Love this movie so much

This movie is so good on so many levels. But like all Kubrick films, you have to bring something to the table...all the answers are not on the screen.

The visual impact of the dreaded microscopic organism was deemed so vital to the suspense drama, that $250,000 was allotted for the creation of special photographic effects by Douglas Trumbull of '2001: A Space Odyssey' (1968) fame, and James Short. Trumbull “imagineered” the germ’s appearance, which in the story was seen on microscope and computer viewing screens at enlargements of up to one million times. A big part of our success was thanks to our in-house visual effects team led by VFX Supervisor Mark Savela. Check out this EVA chasm jump sequence from Stargate: Atlantis's "Adrift" featuring Sheppard and Zelenka. It was shot in what we coined, appropriately enough, the VFX stage - home to the village set, some Atlantis interiors, and the hive ship.

In the Wizard of Oz, the shot of Dorothy walking towards and opening the door was filmed in color on a set painted sepia toned and the Dorothy stand in wearing sepia clothes and make up. After she opens the door she moves out of frame and Judy Garland wearing the regular Dorothy clothes moves into frame. The use of Technicolor, a color film technology, allowed the filmmakers to create the vibrant and colorful world of Oz. The transition from black and white to color was a groundbreaking visual effect at the time and added to the magical experience of the film.
