#OnThisDay, 1968: #2001ASpaceOdyssey was released. The 'Stargate' sequence was achieved through the 'slit-scan' technique, pioneered by Visual Effects Supervisor Douglas Trumbull: exposing a frame of film while the camera tracks in towards an aperture shaped like a narrow slit.

After 2001, Douglas Trumbull swore he would, "never work for anyone else again, because Stanley was one hell of a taskmaster." Initially, I thought this meant he was swearing his allegiance to only work for Stanley, but he actually stopped working for anyone.

All of 2001: A Space Odyssey is a miracle; the impeccable subtle acting, the sound design, score choice and complementary cinematography, the cinematography itself, and the special effects that came out of nowhere (nothing before it remotely came close). Love this movie so much

I've watched so many documentaries about the way they've achieved this monumental, mind-blowing result, and because I'm dumb, I don't understand. I just know it required lots of work and talent, and I'll be forever thankfull for all who worked on #2001ASpaceOdyssey

This movie is so good on so many levels. But like all Kubrick films, you have to bring something to the table...all the answers are not on the screen.
