#OnThisDay in 1996, the second Test between England and India began at Lord’s with an emotional farewell for umpire Dickie Bird. In his 66th and final Test, Bird fought back tears as he walked through a guard of honour formed by both teams at the Pavilion steps.

Azhar’s Masterclass! #OnThisDay in 1993, Mohammed Azharuddin smashed 182 v England at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. Azhar’s 182 came off just 197 balls (12x4, 1x6). India won the test by 8 wickets. This was Gooch’s 100th test & Venkataraghavan’s first test as umpire. Azhar was made captain for only first 2 ODIs and 1st test against England in 1993. Azhar not only retained his captaincy but also became the first Indian captain to win all 3 Tests of a series.

When Dickie Bird Made Dennis Lillee Bowl Spin 😂 During a The Ashes Test in 1975, Lillee was unhappy with the ball and asked Bird to change it. Bird calmly refused, telling him to “complete the over.” A frustrated Lillee had to be persuaded by skipper Ian Chappell to continue but he made his point by bowling off-spin instead of pace. At the end of it, Bird couldn’t resist a quip, telling Lillee they were “two of the best offies” he’d ever seen. 🤣
