Note: Beavers build dams to protect themselves from predators, create safe habitats, store food, and manage water levels. Dams form ponds around their lodges, offering escape routes and winter food caches. This activity also benefits ecosystems by fostering biodiversity, purifying water, and controlling floods. Beavers' dam-building is an innate behavior enhancing their survival and habitat creation.

The world’s largest beaver dam is visible from space in satellite images. It is almost 800 metres long from end-to-end, and holds back run-off water from the Birch Mountains in the southernmost end of Wood Buffalo National Park.
