Our history is undoubtedly a mess that's difficult to explain. Take a look at this Kaiser Wilhelm monument in Kyffhäuser, or simply Kyffhäuserland. According to the official version, it was erected between 1890 and 1896 by Bruno Schmitz and Emil Hundrieser in a monumental style (according to Wikipedia). But I haven't found any explanation for the presence of the figures carved into the columns, which look very much like the Inca and Mayan peoples, but nothing like the population of Germany.
