@b3labs @darylX24 @viktoriya0x @yorkerhodes the rent-to-own framing is clever. 30% entry vs locked-out hyperscaler queues hits exactly where open-source builders live. @b3labs

@b3labs @darylX24 @viktoriya0x @yorkerhodes Weights are democratizing fast yet capacity stays locked till 2030 .🚀 aclosed APIs keep pulling the rug. 🚀 B3IQ’s rent to own ,idle offtake is the cleanest path yet from open source to actual ownership.✅

@b3labs @darylX24 @viktoriya0x @yorkerhodes Love the point about NYU researchers getting banned on closed models. When the tools that matter start gatekeeping research, owning the hardware yourself becomes non negotiable. Excited to see how B3IQ plays out.

@b3labs @darylX24 @viktoriya0x @yorkerhodes B3IQ’s approach of letting the machine pay for itself through idle compute feels like a practical step toward actual decentralization of AI power.

@b3labs @darylX24 @viktoriya0x @yorkerhodes the more I think about it, the more I agree. Owning the model is only half the equation if someone else controls the compute. couldn't finish the video but would find time to do so later.

@b3labs @darylX24 @viktoriya0x @yorkerhodes Open source AI needs open access to compute. @b3labs is tackling that gap making ownership of AI infrastructure more accessible.

@b3labs @darylX24 @viktoriya0x @yorkerhodes Kimi K3 matching frontier performance on just a couple of nodes is wild. If more people can actually own the hardware instead of begging for API access, open-source AI is going to move a lot faster. Solid episode.

David Sacks says companies are trapped paying OpenAI & Anthropic because they can't figure out how to use open source models "I think enterprise CTOs would like to shift their token consumption to cheaper models for the obvious reason that it would be more efficient. They are seeing compute costs or token costs skyrocket right now, so everyone's trying to figure this out." "You also have the AI sovereignty issue that Alex Karp talked about. They're worried about giving up the secret sauce or the alpha in their business to a frontier lab that may one day be competing with them. "The problem is, I think in most cases, they don't have the technical ability to do it. Coinbase figured out how to do it. DoorDash figured out how to do it. They built a token routing system that allows them to send frontier tasks to frontier models and non frontier tasks to more mundane models. But I don't think your average enterprise has the technical capability to do that." "This is why the share of wallet of closed models, it actually increased. I think that open source went from 19% last year to 11% this year. So open source as a share of enterprise spending is actually decreasing." "I don't think that means usage is decreasing. I think usage is skyrocketing. It also may be the case that because the whole point of using an open model is you just pay for the compute costs, you don't have to pay a lab, so it may be that it's hard to measure that usage in terms of spend." "But nonetheless, anyone who's saying that these closed models are going to lose or are somehow losing, you're just not seeing it in the data."

Nathan Lambert, former post-training co-lead at the Allen Institute for AI, now launching Trillium, a nonprofit open AI lab, joins a16z's Lisha Li to discuss whether open models can really keep up with the frontier. When he tells researchers in China that an average OpenAI researcher reportedly has five thousand H100s to work with, "their jaw just falls to the floor." In his view, Chinese labs have the talent but are mostly short on compute. He also thinks the distillation story is overblown. Based on the research, he puts its edge at a few months, and says "there's a bit of cope" in thinking only American labs can build good models. A lot of frontier progress outside math and code comes down to labs buying 1) data and 2) RL environments. It's a multibillion-dollar market, and some of it is sloppy enough to teach models to reward hack. That's a big part of why Trillium exists. Nathan wants to give away the environments other people would sell, and show exactly how his team uses AI to build AI, including where the models still get stuck. His bet is that the more people can see how this works, the better prepared everyone is for what's coming. 0:55 Can open models keep up with the frontier? 2:05 What it takes to reach the frontier 3:55 Open weights and the fast-follower playbook 8:25 Chinese labs: equal talent, less compute 9:55 Why distillation is harder than it looks 14:55 Is distillation theft or competition? 16:20 The lab flywheel vs owning your weights 21:45 Can general models beat every specialist? 26:30 AI at 1% of today's cost in 4 years 27:15 The RL env boom and reward hacking 31:30 What Trillium will build in the open 35:30 Breaking into AI in the age of AI slop 38:05 Open-sourcing how AI builds AI 44:25 Why Nathan isn't pre-training 49:45 Agent swarms and why lab secrets leak 54:25 Fast takeoff vs risks already here YouTube: Nathan Lambert Trillium Labs Lisha
