The French authorities have proven they will do nothing to stop these boats and prevent these men from reaching our beaches, and the British authorities continue to do nothing to stop them or safeguard our communities, then it will come down to English and British men to push back. A hundred years ago our forefathers would have stopped these illegal crossings in five seconds flat. Today our political class calls it “refuge” while boatloads of blokes cross the Channel illegally. They don’t want to stop the boats. That’s the truth. “We need more safe and legal routes.” No. We need zero routes for illegal entrants. Stop the boats. Detain. Deport. Anything less is a betrayal of this country.

In Calais we speak to some of the thousands of migrants hoping to cross on small boats from northern France into the UK - risking their lives in the process. More than 20,000 people have crossed the Channel in small boats so far this year. The Government has promised to tackle the smuggling gangs behind the dangerous journeys. France and the UK are jointly funding police operations along the French coast and both countries are considering a "one in, one out" deal and allowing French officers to venture further from the shoreline to stop boats from leaving. That may be revealed when President Macron visits London next week.
